9/7/2017 The big five

July 9, 20179

Mornin’ all. Inner Westies here.

Stats; Ooddles of swimmers – Ian reckons 270, 7 newbies, air temp 7, water temp 18.4.

Great swim today – almost as clear as yesterday and flat as a pancake. Just beautiful conditions.

Well, African safaris have the big five –  lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros.

But what about the B&B Big 5?..are we in agreement?…the dusky whaler; the blue groper, the eagle ray, the giant cuttlefish and the wobbegong?

Pics courtesy of B&B fishy paparazzi Elaine de Jager & Peter Barfod (not from today but recent snaps).

I know there will be debate…what about the turtle? Indeed, do you have to be big to be beautiful, surely the schools of old wives & yellow tail are beautiful too?

Short and sweet today. See you all very soon.

B&B Monthly Dinner at Bluewater Cafe

The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 11th July at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. The guest speaker on the night will be B&B swimmer, Chief Superintendent Kenneth Murphy (aka Smurf), who was recently awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Ken will give a talk titled “Business as Usual” about the dangers faced by fireman, and highlighted by fire at the Forbes Vast Solar Plant, involving 120,000 litres of liquid sodium.

The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential:  To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book HERE.

AND don’t forget the fabulous ….Australians for Women’s Health TRIVIA NIGHT

Tickets are selling fast for the A4WHTrivia night being held at The Steyne on Tuesday 18th July, 6-9.30pm

The theme is “Naughty”cal so let your imagination run wild with some fancy dress and join in the fun.

John Kelly has kindly volunteered his services as quiz master and is sure to have plenty of “trivial” questions to challenge us.

The proceeds from the evening are being donated to Dr Ray’s charity, Australians 4 Women’s Health, who are building a hospital for women and babies in Charikot, Nepal.

What about an alternative Big 5 of bluies, jimbles, salp, sea lice and the similarly disturbing solstice swimmer?
More seriously, I think the turtle deserves Big 5 status, though I do have a fondness for turtles. They’re certainly sighted frequently enough.
There’s also those rarer sightings, such as the recent Grey Nurse, the Hammerhead last year and the legendary visiting whale.
    We are indeed fortunate.
