29/11/2011 – Beauty Treatment

November 29, 20119

94 ‘ticked’ Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

There was some early activity this morning with a few people enjoying an early Bolderdash and Charlie Camphin, Dave Adams and Tim Holloway kindly checking the waters for us with an early double lap to Shelly and back.

The regular swim was full of adventure; starting with a complimentary seaweed peel, followed by a current at the point helping everyone sneak towards Shelly before we set off on a rock ‘n roll swim with plenty of scenery… some of it marine, including sharks, 3 large rays, fan-bellied leatherjackets and the like, but unfortunately plenty of it was debris as you can see from Attracta Wolohan’s collection.  What a valuable role wetsuits have to play in our morning swims !

6km summer badge swims start this Saturday !  They start with the regular 7am Shelly Swim and continue on up to Freshie and back…  There is plenty of stopping to re-group along the way, although of course as usual everyone swims at their own risk.  Fins, wetsuits, snorkels and the like are all welcome… For more more details on the summer badge swims click here.

Check out the fantastic B&B on tour photos below of Peta Saunders swimming in 5 degree water in the beautiful Milford Sound, New Zealand.  There are more too… to view them click here – Go Peta !!!

Tim’s fact of the day: “Whale sharks have the largest number of teeth in the world. They have more than 4000 teeth, each tooth measuring about 3-4 millimetres.”

The Cancer Council’s ‘Relay for Life’ information night tonight at North Steyne SLSC from 7pm, anyone interested is welcome and encouraged to attend.

It’s Ocean Care Day this Sunday at Manly Environment Centre from 10.30am – 4.30pm.  If anyone could spare an hour to be down there to talk to people about the beauty of the stunning bay in which we are privileged to swim everyday, your help and passion would be most appreciated.  If you can help at all during the day please phone Robynne on 0417 124 992 to let her know.

Air Temperature 19.5 degrees.
Sunrise 5.38am.
Sunset 7.49pm.
Low Tide: 5.34am.
High Tide: 12.02pm

I made a nice collection today as well: a thick plastic bag landed over my HEAD, and numerous bags placed themselves right into my hands. Its really upsetting to see all the bits of plastic so at least all of us gather as much as we can! Better a bag over my head than a dolphin or a shark’s, as they dont have hands to get them off with!
Also does anybody know the correct name for that large wrasse-fish with the white markings on its face?

You are so right, Fifi, if we all collected even the smallest bit of plastic every time we swam or visited the beach, we’d be making a big difference in the lives of dolphins and fish.
I tucked a plastic bait bag into the back of my cozzie this morning – didn’t unduly impede my already lacking style but made me feel slightly saintly 🙂

I think everybody tucks bits in their cossies. I had so much weed in mine today, a plastic bag made no difference at all.
You are All Style, my dear, with or without plastic wads.

Hard to be sure without more details, but the red morwong (Cheilodactylus fuscus) has white markings on its face and also on the sides of its body near the tail. It is pinkish or brownish, and quite common, but has very prominent eyebrows to make up for it!

ah, thank you jane, I will now go off and have a look, i did kind of think it might be a morwong. Common or no, it is really lovely with its decorated face. 🙂

One thing I have never been guilty of is tucking things into my cossies. I am quite happy with what is in there already.
