09/06/2011 – Chill Factor

June 9, 201111

51 ‘ticked’ Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

A very chilly start this morning, but well worth the effort. Winter really is the best time of year, the water is often just perfect and it really isn’t that cold once you get in.

There’s over 160 people currently on target for their winter badge, which is awesome ! Click on the links on the left hand side of the blog to keep track of you and you friends 🙂

Tailors have arrived… Boy Michel saw Tailors this morning, apparently they are only seen in Sydney waters during the winter months. I think Michel is planning to swim in his trousers
tomorrow as he says they need taking up… !

The first three beautiful photos are courtesy of James Goins. First one is a beautiful silhouette of Boy Michel and the second one is John Masters’ head :-).

Happy birthday to Magnus Butlin today 🙂

Water Temperature 17.0 degrees.
Air Temperature 7 degrees.
Sunrise 6.56am.
Sunset 4.53pm.
Low Tide: 8.01am.
High Tide: 2.23pm

Hi Stephen, re your question yetserday about whetehr Orcas are legal for the Magnetic Island swim, the somewhat adamant advice that I have received is:
Nope – never been deemed legal for FINA open water swimming. Closest you can get to an Orca Wetsuit would be a Blueseventy pointzero3. The Orca wetsuits have way too much neoprene to have ever been legal for open water swimming.
The reality is, however, that unless you’re in the running for a prize, noone is going to care. Mind you, you wouldn’t need the Orca for warmth, the water up there is about 24 degrees usually and stingers aren’t a problem at that time of the year.

WOW!! What a beautiful swim today. It doesn’t get much better than that. Flat, warm and sunny. The archetypal winter’s day. The only thing that can improve is the visibility and that seems to be progressing quite well also.
Water temperature was 17c today and it will probably stay that way now. There is a strong eddy current in the EAC which is bringing the cooler water up to Sydney. The good news however is that there is nothing much cooler on the way for quite some time I would say. Offshore [which is about 7km out] is still 19c, but this will also change down.
There is quite a large swell predicted to start tomorrow at 4.5m plus. This will be from the South west however and I doubt we will even notice it in Manly. I should be sunny and another great day for winter swimming.
Anyone who hasn’t checked out the attendance icon on the left hand upper part of the blog, should do so. It is an accurate count of who TICKED and also now lists everyone who swam, hopefully with a photo. If you swam and are not on the list, it is probably because you didn’t tick. Let me know if you have been left off and I will adjust it.
It is great to have the photos with the name, so if you haven’t got one in the wall of fame, see me in the morning before or after the swim, and I’ll get a good closeup for you.

Did you get stung this week? If so are you interested in what stung you? 😉 (if you didn’t already know!) See this link:
    http://www.marinestingers.com.au/stingers/
I think a carybdea (jimble) got me on the face this morning – is still burning 8 hours later! Has some good pics on the website and also what the sting looks like on the skin! I think the cold water though is helping the initial sting not feel so bad – in other words the cold felt worse for me than the sting.. in fact the sting was welcome warmth! 😉
Check out the size of the chironex!! omg!

What about the biters Brendan? Are they any more of a problem at that time of year?
Also, any advice on accommodation near your place? Is there a rental house/apartment next door/nearby a group of us could rent?
    Cheers,
    Stephen

Don’t worry about the tiger sharks Stephen, the crocodiles scare them away. i’ll make some enquiries about nearby accomodation.

Thanks Julie for the Happy Birthday to Magnus. We had hoped to join you for a birthday swim but my cold has lingered longer than I would have liked. Hope to be better by the weekend 🙂

Hope you were all stinger free this morning. Celso’s sting got much worse over night with a weeping sore developing where the tentacle lashed his cheek. 1.5hr at emergency and some heavy duty anti hist’s and antibiotics later he is resting well.

Interesting that 2008 was the first cage-less swim, as in shark cages, according the swim website. Makes it sound exciting.
