06/04/2012 – Good Friday Swim

April 6, 20127

Well Over 180 Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

A decent surf, a lot of swell, a ton of people and a beautiful swim.

A few swimmers set off for an early swim this morning up to Queensie making it back in time to join us into Shelly.  We can relive their early swim through Gaetan’s great photos 🙂

With a decent swell pumping through some heavy waves the majority of us swam to and from half way beach which Timberlie captured beautifully through sooper dooper lens…

To see more of Tim’s photos please check them out here

Tim say’s it’s Good Friday so we should be extra good to each other 🙂 So, he would really appreciate it if you would like his Manly Surf Co page on Facebook when you view his photos on the link above.  If he gets 25 ‘likes’ he’ll give away (to one lucky person picked at random) a free 12″x18″ colour print (value $65) of one any of his images.  Happy Easter people.

Some more great photos taken by Gaetan today at Shelly:

As happens in life, occasionaly people make mistakes, misjudge conditions and their ability.  Thankfully we are surrounded by a wonderful group of people so someone is usually around to offer a helping hand, however, this is never a guarantee (people swim at their own risk at all times).

However, the best way to avoid accidents is to be educated and to take care.

As a swimmer Michael has kindly put together some information which is his opinion only on staying safe in the surf.  Please could we encourage you all to read through the document, contribute to the conversation and add your comments by clicking here

Water Temperature 21.6
Air Temperature 19.5

Michael, what an excellent document you’ve put together. Thank you for writing such a comprehensive and easy to understand ‘manual’, and I agree with the Riddington ‘stay calm’ approach too.
As a group of individual swimmers, we are extremely lucky to have quite a few people with plenty of ocean swimming expertise. I encourage anyone who is unsure about rips, waves, sets, techniques for diving under, etc to chat about it with fellow swim friends.
I would perhaps add to Michael’s fine words that pairing up with a swim buddy helps reduce the risk of panic.
Tim – love the photos of Julie! Happy Easter everyone!

I agree completely with Anna. It’s good to go in with someone experienced so you can learn more about the conditions. I think this way also lessens the panic Michael talks about.

Thanks a lot Michael, this is a great document, probably common sense to all life savers but for people like me who aren’t, this is very helpful!!!

Love the help guide Michael. I could’ve done with that yesterday at Seal Rocks, my legrope broke and I was faced with no board and rollers just facing me. It was particularly scary when I got dumped under the water and pinned to the floor. You just look up and see foam as you scrabble to the top for air. I’m realizing I need to be more careful !!!

I also think if you are genuinely tired don’t risk it. You have to be confident and not afraid. Buddy up and enjoy it.
