05/02/2011 – 10km Summer Badge Achievements

February 5, 201112

Over 105 Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

Including 16 new Bold & Beautiful swimmers today – welcome to you all.

Not only is it a hot day, it’s also the warmest water temperature to date at 25.2 degrees – very very nice indeed 🙂

23 swimmers continued on after the regular swim this morning: Neil Cowin, Roberto Suares and Tony Box continued onto Queenscliff, Peter Bowes and Sheri Deacon swam to Freshwater and
18 swimmers continued on to complete 10km by swimming onto South Curl Curl where we were greeted with a teddy bears picnic (or should i say feast) very kindly supplied by Kelly’s parents: Tony and Anne Johnson, Anna Alvsdotter’s husband and eldest son: Richard and Tomas Lees and chief sunscreen applicator Maureen Rath. It was hard to drag ourselves back into the water but we did and had a great swim back to Manly then a swim into Shelly Beach and back to finish off a solid 10km swim. We had the unexpected but welcome company of the Freshie IRB as we
crossed their bay on the way back, that was nice, thanks guys.

The conditions were just superb; sun, warm water, a bit bumpy around Curly Headland but crystal clear water the whole way.

The heroic 10km finishers are:
Anna Alvsdotter, Ben Hutt, Brendan Maher, Christy McLean, Collie Kinsella, Gavin Skinstad, Iain McGregor, Isobel Kirk, Jan Beacham, Jenny Knapman, John Bond, Julie Isbill, Kelly Johnson, Lori Szambowski, Michael Christie, Richard Agius, Richard Murray and Stuart Johnson.

You guys are all absolutely truly amazing – very well done ! 🙂

After a lovely post swim celebration at Manly Lodge I’m sure there will be lots of ‘Nanna Naps’ this afternoon.

Oh and not to forget Brendan Maher decided that wasn’t quite enough so he was joined by Millie Joseph and then he continued on for another ~4km. There is a reason, Other than insanity, Brendan is training for Rottnest solo in 3 weeks.

The next challenge:

So who’s up for the ‘Across The Heads’ swim next Saturday and in what capacity? Please comment on this blog and let everyone know, thank you.

All the photos from both Australia Day and Round The Heads are now up on the website. Go to: www.pacificjules.com.au Then go to Bold & Beautiful the click on the two relevant photo pages. Sorry for the delay, but I hope you enjoy them 🙂

Water Temperature 25.2 degrees.
Sunrise 6.20am.
Sunset 7.58pm.
High Tide: 10.31am.
Low Tide: 4.56pm

Thanks to Julie and everyone who swam which enabled me to complete another 10km challenge. The conditions were great except for a few bumpier sections near South Curly. Once again thank you to Tony and Anne for the much appreciated food supplies at Curly and also to Maureen,Richard and Tomas. Well done to those who completed all three 10km swims. It’s time for a nice cold beer.

Today’s journey had a little of everything:
    – lovely clear water
    – marine life off Manly Point – I saw 8-odd feet of shark (one 4ft dusky and a couple of babies)
    – big schools of fish – tailor and yellowtail
    – swell around the headlands
    – a headwind and challenging current into Curl Curl
    – catching a wave onto Curly and a rip out of Curly
    – teddy bears picnic (makes this swim special)
    – tough last little section in and out of Shelly – into the wind chop – when the arms weren’t working so well anymore
Good call, swimming in the ocean today
I had 2 soft drinks on the drive home, still trying to get that salt water taste out of my mouth
Well done to all, especially those who completed their first 10k swim. And well done to all the others for their encouragement all the way.

Yes indeed, congratulations to everyone on a great swim and thanks too for your company and support. It would be pretty hard doing it on your own!!
It certainly was a spectacular swim with warm water and a very warm day.
Special thanks to Tony and Anne and Richard and Thomas. You are very much appreciated guys, believe me. Also Maureen for the sunscreen, something I hate doing.

I’m still on sea legs! Great feeling of accomplishment, but good sea and weather conditions coupled with excellent back-up support by Tony, Anne, Tomas, Richard and Maureen made it all possible.
Thank you, Julie and Michael, for the opportunity to try an adventure that simply wouldn’t have been on my mental map two years ago.

What a beautiful regular swim this morning. Saw so many fish I almost forgot to breathe. Congratulations to all who completed the 10km swim. Spectacular sight of pink caps off South Curly headland. Glad to have been of some assistance.

Congratulations guys! Reading about your wonderful experience makes me really wonder why I did not just stay in Manly for my holiday 🙂 Another terrific achievement! And well done to Kelly, Julie and Mike for completing all 10km swims (and around the head as well)!!!

Even more special Mom was at the finish all the way from Canada!! Very Happy Canadian over here! Cheers to the passion of water!!! :)xo

Thanks very much everyone for a great and challenging swim. I staggered out of the water at 2.00pm in the end. It was a long haul back up to Harbord into the windchop the second time around. Wish I’d remembered to put sunscreen on the back of my legs though, I felt that overnight!
I’d love to swim across the Heads on saturday, but need to get some gear across as i’m staying over that side. Is anyone taking a boat across?
