130 Bold & Beautiful swimmers.
Gorgeous conditions this morning, with a flat, calm and very inviting ocean, well all but that damn temperature, which amazingly didn’t deter 21 swimmers from setting off on our first 6km summer badge swim for the season which ended up being the most circuitous route I think we have ever created…
We continued on from the Shelly swim for what we intended to be up to Freshie and back, but once we neared Queensie the surf boats were training for their carnival super far out to sea, so we changed to ‘plan b’ en-route which was to turn around, swim back to the point, out to the Bower thanks to Cae’s great suggestion, into Shelly Beach, then back to Manly.
Gosh the water was beautiful and how about that; 21 starters for the first 6km badge of the summer !! Many of whom have never swum that far before. Well done everyone – you guys rock !! We hope you will do some more of our 6km Saturdays which will include the beautiful lap across to Freshie and back as it really is a special swim 🙂
Our improvised en-route ‘plan b’ did result in a couple of individual experiences, Anna demonstrated she still has a fetish for surf boat rowers as she called one crew over for a special chat… Peter made friends with another crew and walked back, Dave swum the gauntlet and found the only bluie in the shire, to quote James who followed after him thinking he was chasing Neil and Brendan who made it all the way to Freshie..
4 swimmers; Brendan Maher, Collie Kinsela, Gaetan Guilhon and Iain McGregor got up early to enjoy and early start too, so all up Brendan and Collie enjoyed a 9km swim before breakfast !! Go you good things 🙂
Check out our daily attendance sheet to see today’s swimmers which now includes the 6km swim too, thanks to Magnus Butlin… looking good hey !! 🙂 If you’re name should be there please let us know.
It must have been superb conditions for Curly’s 3 points challenge today, hope everyone who participated in that did well and enjoyed it.
Good luck to everyone in the Bondi to Bronte tomorrow and especially to Brendan, James and co who are taking the advantage of the opportunity and are going to swim the B2B2B… 🙂 Let us know all about it.
As you may have seen in Anna’s comment yesterday; there is a great art show fundraiser in Balgowlah for a local mum with a life threatening illness, this Sunday from 1-6pm at Red Olive Studios, 1/294 Sydney Rd, Balgowlah. Please feel free to pop in and enjoy the afternoon. Everyone is encouraged to visit the studio during this time and support Kere and her wonderful family. ‘Carbo’ from Packed to the Rafters is the MD and there will be live music, fantastic art by local artists, Xmas pressie shopping and lots lots more.
Tim’s fact of the day: “Beluga whales are called sea canaries.”
Another fun activity supporting a great cause coming up… If you’ve always wanted to ‘strut the streets’ of Sydney in your togs, now is your chance: Join AIME on Friday 9th December 2011 for Australia’s largest charity strut. A great way to warm up for our Christmas Party, with is the same day starting at 7pm. All proceeds from ‘Strut the Streets’ go towards the AIME Program, which supports Indigenous kids to finish school at the same rate as every Australian child. Circuitous? Nice one Jules.
What a great first 6km swim of the season; no big sharks in sight over at the shark nets, only 5% wastage, and we even had a bit of slsa water safety at Bower.
As you can see, I need to dig out the BIG fins to keep up with Chris and the rest of you. It was a lovely swim.

It really was a nice swim, and should be just as nice tomorrow.
There was lots of Plankton this morning, so maybe that will attract some plankton eaters. You never know.
