When I look at waves all I see is the size of them. Wiser people say things like – it is big but not breaking or it has no power in it etc. I feel that the skills you need to be an improving ocean swimmer are sort of like magic eye skills – keep looking and one day you will see what the other people say is there. The waves were manageable for me today. There were lots of swimmers for a great swim today having checked the waves out for themselves.
Including Kate who is visiting mum and dad who live in Sydney but she lives in Alice Springs. Look out for our Edwina who is going to work in the Alice Springs Hospital. Good to see you Kate. I hope you enjoyed your swim
Tropical temp today
Lots of newbies today which is just fantastic. Most were brought by a clever friend or family member who already swims
Lovely Monica swimming today was kind enough to let hubby Bernhard and Michael join in her photo
Jackie is having her last swim for a while today as she is going to Hong Kong. Bon Voyage and see you when you return
Caroline has brought John who is from Northern Ireland (where our Lyndall is joust about to go again). For John the water temp is like a hot bath.
Here are some locals who brought friends/family from Edinburgh.
I got in late so my encounters with early swimmers photos are on land. Here are two swimmers who are carrying future swimmers (due May) on board. Fabulous
The shower scene
Mum and daughter – Jill and Milly
some families swimming together and enjoying the marine life in Cabbage Tree Bay. I think some fish and stingarees were spotted
Quetzal
Carla on her first swim and tring out her new mask. She helped me out through the waves
Batman and catwoman
A new swimmer today – with the beard
Gillian and Jonathan
3 x 14 year old swimmers enjoying the reserve
Tripler
Marco (son of Bernhard and Monica) who has completed the HSC. well done. He is now looking forward to uni. Great to see him today
Save the dates
21 January 2018 | Clear Tides is a non-profit organisation that was established in 2017 by Marine biology student, bold and beautiful swimmer and cabbage tree bay snorkel instructor – Jessica Brading. The mission of the organisation is to spread our love and respect for the ocean, environment and marine animals.
On Sunday 21st January, Clear Tides is holding their first ever event – SHELLY BEACH CLEAN AND SNORKEL! Head on over to Shelly beach after your morning swim and help Jess and her team clean up our beloved bay and then head out for a snorkel after (or another swim if your game). If that’s not enough incentive… there’s free brunch! Invite your friends and family – lets team up and support local organisations in maintaining our beautiful cabbage tree bay. |
28 January 2018 | Big swim – Palm Beach to Whale Beach – coming up and a lot of BB swimmers do this. Even I have done it. But seeing some material from years gone by I was amazed to be mentioned:

4 February 2018 | Manly LSC would love to get the B&B swimmers involved in helping at the Cole Classic this year on the 4th Feb.
This is a great chance to support each other on the Cole Classic which is a major fundraiser for MLSC and great chance to show the wider community what a well run and safe swim we can provide. They basically want to get as many B&B MLSC bronzies for water safety as possible, and it would also be great to involve non-bronzie B&B members with land based support. This would primarily be around Registration and Bag minding area, but not restricted to that. There will be shade, shifts will be staggered, barby and drinks provided. They will also have a wrap-barby with food and a couple of drinks(boozey) provided as a token of their appreciation. Please contact Simone at volunteer@manlylsc.com or shhill@bigpond.com or message Simone Hill on Facebook and let her know if you can help |
What I have been reading
To keep it light I have been reading Michael Connelly’s book again The Concrete Blonde . I have also started Eleanor Oliphant is Fine. So far a very good read from the first person perspective and the narrator is an intriguing character.
3 BADGES – Summer long distance swimming season
Badges will be presented at the Summer Badge Ceremony in March. If you are unsure of the routes and protocols for these swims, please ask at the desk before you swim. When swimming these longer distances, we request that, for safety reasons, you stay with the group. We also request that you do not swim in dangerous conditions. The quest for a little cloth badge is not worth putting your life at risk.
6 km | The 6 km swims are held every summer Saturday morning generally starting with the 7 am swim. The first 6 km swim will be on Saturday 2nd December. You will earn a badge if you complete these swims and log them in iLog. The system will only record authorised 6K swims that are logged on the appropriate days. |
10 km | There is a 10 km swim once a month over summer also generally starting with the 7 am swim. Dates for these will be announced in the blog. The first was on December 16th. You will earn a badge if you complete these swims and log them in iLog. The system will only record authorised 10K swims that are logged on the appropriate days. |
Triple |
If these swims are too long for you, you can try a Triple Manly to Shelly swim any day during Summer (distance 3.5 km) from 6.30 or 7 am. |

Lovely inclusive blog as usual Elizabeth. I find it really hard to see rips! Some people are so good at identifying changes of color and direction in the water. I just see water! Great to swim with brave Nat today. Her first swim since surgery for breast cancer.

Thanks you for the lovely welcome and swim! I can’t read the waves but I can join like-minded folk for the journey. I’ll be back next holidays and will look for Edwina in AliceSprings,

Great blog again Elizabeth. I can’t get over the rate of your reading. I am (still) reading Curing Affluenza by Richard Denniss (how to buy less stuff and save the world)…as the book states, affluenza is that strange desire we feel to spend money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t know…Of course I was tempted not to buy the book for possibly the same reason but was glad that I did!

I bought a magazine which was about decluttering but it did not tell me where to put it after reading it
