18/10/2011 – Stunning, Super… Great Swim

18/10/201112

72 ‘ticked’ Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

13 people did an early lap and 3 people enjoyed a bonus double lap after the regular 7am swim.

It was magnificent conditions this morning, so clear and calm !!

Shame about the blanket of Jimbles this morning which were mainly gathered at the point, thankfully most people escaped Jimble free, but James Goins managed to get a great photo of them along with the lovely sunrise and the early swimmers entering around 6.20am.

If anyone is considering getting back into swimming, now is definitely the time, it really is beautiful out there and the chance of seeing whales or dolphins is pretty high at the moment too.

Gaetan took a lovely bright almost arial shot, of us all going in for the regular swim this morning after he bailed, post his early lap, thanks Gaetan.

Heidi James walked alongside us and got some great photos on route of this morning’s swim, thanks Heidi.

Michael is that a flathead in flathead’s clothing today ???

Little Sarah Abbott saw our Estuary Catfish (kindly identified by Jane yesterday)  just before the point this morning, plus she also saw a shovel nosed shark or a fiddler ray… we couldn’t quite work out the identity as Sarah and Jon’s description were very different.  Although Sarah did set a new trend as she forget her trousers, so maybe Jon’s description is more reliable… 😉

Manly Wine Sponsored B&B October Nibbles is TONIGHT from 6.30pm, look forward to seeing you all there.

Tim’s fact of the day: “Fish never stop growing.  The older they get the bigger they grow.”

Water Temperature 18.8 degrees.
Air Temperature 16 degrees.
Sunrise 6.11am.
Sunset 7.10pm.
Low Tide: 6.14am.

High Tide: 12.47pm.

Lovely jelly photo. According to my book, this is the Southern jimble (Carybdea rastoni), which is closely related to the deadly box jelly, but has a very mild sting, unless it “contacts a sensitive area such as the lips or genitals”. So keep your smugglers on, gentlemen!

Yes, those who go out in wetsuits, don’t leave home without your trousers, especially if you’re on your way to Coles!
And yes, Jon & Jules are more accurate, it was a large fiddler ray, just the shape of this one:

As I swam over, just past the point, I felt I was picking up handfuls of fish – are those the jimbles? Great educational swims and beautiful conditions as you’ve all said.

Sarah I had a good look whilst waiting at the point at the jelly fish surrounding us , there were hundreds of them! – not sure what they were but looking at some pics of jellyfish on line they seem to resemble a Comb jellyfish…I could feel them going through my fingers whilst swimming! Glad they weren’t jimbles!
The test of a real man is if he can put a jimble down his budgies! 😉
