Beneath the Surface

12/05/20260

The last few mornings at Manly Beach have felt nothing short of magical. The water visibility has been superb, the temperature is hovering around 20 degrees, and the ocean has been alive with wildlife.

Today’s swim was especially memorable, with three cuttlefish, two wobbegongs, schools of fish weaving beneath us, and a very big blue groper gliding near the shed. Absolutely stunning.

Standing on the beach before the swim, the ocean didn’t give much away. The sky was overcast with bursts of yellow sunshine breaking through, and from above the water looked quite ordinary. But once beneath the surface, it revealed a completely different world – vibrant, peaceful, and full of wonder.

There was something really special about swimming alongside friends this morning. As we approached Shelly Beach, excitement spread quickly through the group with everyone bobbing around, sharing stories of what they had spotted and where they had seen it. The giggles, chatter, and shared joy made the swim feel even more magical.

Even the sand felt softer underfoot today, adding to the sense that everything had aligned perfectly for one of those unforgettable mornings. These are the swims that remind us just how lucky we are to have this incredible marine playground right on our doorstep.

It truly is a place that is very dear to my heart – a beautiful reminder that even on grey and cloudy mornings, there is often extraordinary beauty waiting just beneath the surface.
