Welcome to the random Tuesday blog.
Ah Tuesday – the sun starts off ruby red in the east and then makes its presence to show that things well and truly under way.
After those exciting swells of last week, we’ve returned to cool, flat conditions.
Random: Made, done, or happening without method or conscious decision.
Tuesday is rarely a day for spontaneous or random activities but I asked swimmers if they had any random plans for the day.
Above: A random pink cap wades in at Manly – one of the small but disciplined contingent of 7.54am starters.
Other random swimming numbers from today:
63 by 10.30am
115 by 11.15am
129 by 2pm
Above: Anna and Maggie are planning on getting new wetsuits. “Our suits may be getting old, but our (swimming) joy is always new,” Maggie says enthusiastically.
Above: Stuart has been swimming with B&B for about many years so this is no random decision. What is kind of different is commuting to an office block for work.
Above: Chloe and Louise work for the same firm and have both switched to a ‘work for four days, get paid for five’ plan . Sounds like a good deal to me. This means that Chloe can plan random activities on her Tuesday.
Above: Random footprints in the sand.
Above: Slightly bigger foot – this one stood on a random shopping trolley. I’m sticking to the water.
Above: Peter’s act of randomness for the day will probably to take the slow ferry after an early, fast swim.
Above: Amanda and Nat enjoyed their swim but are heading into a ‘normal’ working day – no randomness on the agenda.
Above: Random announcement – swim anywhere, any time to qualify for your 2020 once off – unique – Covid-19 Winter Challenge badge. Due to Covid-19 and the current government guidelines limiting the number of people allowed to be in a group, Bold & Beautiful is still currently suspended.
Above: Helen’s act of randomness was to do a single and then swim to the pipes.
Above: Today’s sunrise, yesterday’s sea temperature of 17.0 and today’s air temperature which felt like 7 degrees. Definitely warmer under water until the sun spread its beneficial rays. Can someone please update the wall.
Above: Charl’s act of random spontaneity today will be to have an extra shot of caffeine in his post-swim coffee.
Above: Today’s famous birthday – Ernest Hemingway would have turned 121.
“How little we know of what there is to know… I’d like to be an old man to really know. I wonder if you keep on learning or if there is only a certain amount each man can understand. I thought I knew so many things that I know nothing of. I wish there was more time.”
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Above: Happy Birthday to Merlin who turns 11 tomorrow. He forced his way back into this blog and is pictured randomly dreaming of the day that swimming (for him) becomes legal at Manly.
Take care, stay safe – remember it ain’t over till it’s over.

And now a word from our sponsors!
Please maintain social distancing and be aware of the number of people congregating outside MSLC.
Government regulations still require us to keep 1.5m away from each other unless you live in same house,
We appreciate that you want to chat to your friends and socialise but we need your help to make sure we comply with these regulations before we are forced to introduce more onerous restrictions.
With that in mind we ask that you respect your fellow swimmers and members of the public in the following manner:
- Please start leaving bags and gear on the beach or step at below the ramp rather than outside MSLC
- Keep at least 1.5m apart before, during and after all swims.
- Arrive, complete your swim and leave.. If you are having coffee or socialising please do so away from the MSLC
- Consider swimming at different times to keep the number of people congregating at MSLC to a minimum.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Announcing the 3000km badge
Are you amazed by our wonderful swimmers that day in day out log nice long swims. Well now, not only can you claim a 500km 1000km and 2000km badge but a 3000km badge will be available. Those eligible swimmers who have logged approved Bold and Beautiful swims will be able to claim the 3000km badge, the first of which will be awarded at the Winter Badge Ceremony.
Swim Anywhere, Any time to qualify for your 2020 Once Off – Unique – Covid Winter Challenge. Due to Covid-19 and the current government guidelines limiting the number of people allowed to be in a group, Bold & Beautiful is still currently suspended.
But we recognise many of our swimmers are still swimming at various times and locations, and it is more important than ever to remain fit, healthy and connected.
As such, B&B is offering this unique, one off, Covid 2020 Winter Challenge Badge, kindly designed by our amazingly creative swimmer, Linda from Manly Mac Art.
To qualify for your Covid Winter Challenge Badge you need to swim 20 times across 7 different weeks of winter, between 1st June – 31st August.
If you are swimming at Manly, any time of the day, please continue to log your swim as Manly – Shelly Swim, this swim will not only count towards your Covid Winter Challenge Badge, it will also continue to count towards the Pacific Challenge.
If you are swimming in any other location, anywhere in the world, please tick your swim as ‘Covid Swim’, this will give you a special 19m on the Pacific Challenge and will count towards your Covid Winter Challenge.
Log your 20 (or more) swims without a wetsuit and you will be eligible for the special 2020 ICC (Ice Cold Corona) badge.
YOU MUST LOG YOUR SWIMS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR COVID BADGE(S)

We are living in random times. I am clinging to routine at the moment, searching for a simulacrum of certainty, so your blog was quite unsettling. Especially the photo of Big Foot. Normally I enjoy a big root as much as the next person, but that was next level random. Merlin’s calm Lab demeanor was most welcome. Thank you Big O

Thanks Elizabeth. Yes, he was a complicated character.
It’s amazing how many pubs and restaurants carry his name around the world.
