I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks exploring the Tasmanian wilderness recently and was struck by the beauty and grandeur of the old growth forests. I was also struck by the dichotomy in the population between those who are fighting to preserve the remaining wilderness and those who feel it should all be tamed. I fear that the latter group still do not realize what a precious resource wild places are in an increasingly over populated and over exploited world. This state of mind was highlighted by a comment made by a person running “eco tours” of the Bay of Fires who said that if only Tasmania had been allowed to dam the Franklin river they would not be having these power shortage problems now.
That said, it is heartening to see so many people down at Manly in the mornings enjoying life and making the most of what we have. Let’s make sure we preserve it for the generations to come by encouraging our politicians to create more marine and national parks and to ensure that they are adequately supported and maintained!

Fab blog Joe. Love the opening sentiments. Pic 9 (silhouetted swimmers entering the water in front of the pink of the dawn) is superb, as are the action water shots and the inclusiveness
