BOLD & BEAUTIFUL IS NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING DUE TO THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL DISTANCING AS MUCH AS IS POSSIBLE DUE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
How to keep warm before and after your swim
We’re counting down to the shortest day of the year and it’s getting colder, so I thought I’d ask for some tips on how B&Bers keep warm before and after a swim. As for the swim itself, we all know it’s a case of finding those warm patches of water.
But first, the sunrise brought promise of another spectacular day … and swim.
Manly is returning to exercise central as the gymsters, bootcampers, volleyballers, kayakers, tightrope walkers, surfers, swimmers and others make the best use of land and water.
It is almost back to normal parking spots at a premium all the way down to North Steyne and beyond.
Above: Sunrise paddlers and strollers out soaking up early beneficial rays.
Above: Out of Africa and into Australia via Hong Kong – sound familiar?
Above: Met Nick and Jaqui on my walk south. Their advice for staying warm – “Stay out of the water.”
Above: Stroll among the pines – yes they are pines not 5G transmitters pretending to be pines. They (the trees) stay warm through photosynthesis and other stuff.
Above: Justus and Susie. Great to see Justus at “Potgietersrus bench”. Susie takes a nice long hot shower after her swim to keep warm. We won’t say how long – just that you might be able to do a ferry trip to the city in the same amount of time! Justus says he keeps warm by “not going into the water to start with” but we know he won’t be able to resist it soon.
Above: Shanny’s post-swim warm-up tip – two litres of hot water at 50 degrees out of a recycled Sard super container with a sturdy handle.
Above: Bruce says at 17 degrees, it is a bit warmer for this time of the year. He chooses between a long sleeved wet suit and a short sleeve and as the conditions today are warm and clear, he went for the short sleeved wettie. He misses the hot showers afterwards at Manly SLSC.
Above: Duncan and Drinkie. Duncan recommends vigorous kicking at the start of a swim combined with hot water at the end to beat the cold.
Above: Claire and Jo. Claire goes for the extra layers before and after a swim for warmth while Jo is a believer in the two litre hot H2O treatment.
Above: Jon goes for the colour co-ordinated orange hot water bottle and beanie to keep warm after his 6.30am swim.
Above: Chris has decided to lose the wetsuit and do a winter without wettie provided he has that Aldi 5 litre former dishwashing container of water warmly waiting at the end of the swim.
Above: Cow Nose Rays have been sighted again in Cabbage Tree Bay so look out for this spectacle. This is a pic that Lainey took on their last visit.
Above: Mike says he finds his canine hot water bottle Abbie is a good warmer after a winter swim. Great to see Abbie wagging her tail again after a rushed visit to the emergency vet during quarantine.
Above: Golden guitar case – there’s a thousand tunes that could be played for this sunrise. Put a happy one in your head now and keep it there for the rest of the day.
I did see a wonderfully handpainted shower bottle with turtles and other marine life on it the other day but could not find it today to photograph. Full marks for creativity!
As for me, my current budget does not extend to a wetsuit, so I guess I will continue to imitate that new environmentally windmill at Shelly Beach with my arms and legs. Afterwards I celebrate another winter-without-wetsuit swim with 2 litres of Warangamba’s finest water via the kettle and into my trusty juice bottle.
Today’s temperature: About 17. However its always 21 according a local surfing website!
Number of swimmers:
77 people by 10am
148 by 12 noon
Keep warm and safe and remember it ain’t over till it’s over.

Swim Anywhere, Any time to qualify for your 2020 Once Off – Unique – Covid Winter Challenge
Due to Covid-19 and the current government guidelines limiting the number of people allowed to be in a group, Bold & Beautiful is still currently suspended.
But we recognise many of our swimmers are still swimming at various times and locations, and it is more important than ever to remain fit, healthy and connected.
As such, B&B is offering this unique, one off, Covid 2020 Winter Challenge Badge, kindly designed by our amazingly creative swimmer, Linda from Manly Mac Art.
To qualify for your Covid Winter Challenge Badge you need to swim 20 times across 7 different weeks of winter, between 1st June – 31st August.
If you are swimming at Manly, any time of the day, please continue to log your swim as Manly – Shelly Swim, this swim will not only count towards your Covid Winter Challenge Badge, it will also continue to count towards the Pacific Challenge.
If you are swimming in any other location, anywhere in the world, please tick your swim as ‘Covid Swim’, this will give you a special 19m on the Pacific Challenge and will count towards your Covid Winter Challenge.
Log your 20 (or more) swims without a wetsuit and you will be eligible for the special 2020 ICC (Ice Cold Corona) badge.

California meets Tamworth!
Your golden glow suffuses swimmers with all the warmth they need. Drinkie stays hot by non stop smouldering.
Some 5G conspiracy theory thrown in for topicality, but the science of photosynthesis kicks that butt!
Thanks Adrian.
