Above: Welcome to this blog of the 8th day of January, 2021. What a a fabulous day. Blue sky with a single puff of cloud.
Above: At midnight on Sunday, we welcomed our northern neighbours back to the fold. It’s great to have Bold and Beautiful swimmers return. Matt from North Narabeen is one of those who has returned from “north of the wall” and who was keen rejoin his 6.30 colleagues.
My word for today day was spontaneous. I asked swimmers to tell me about something spontaneous that have done in their lives or give me a spontaneous quote.
Above: Derek gave a spontaneous “Thank you that I am alive and get to enjoy this day”.
Above: Is this man spontaneous or what? Sean headed for a surf down south then climbed Mt Budawang before returning last night so that he could have a swim and dash off to mow the lawn.
Above: Richard’s (left) recent act of spontaneity was to buy a campervan – he spotted this bargain on the Bold and Beautiful blog. Danny had an eye on more immediate plans with a spontaneous purchase of a new pair of goggles.
Above: Sabrina’s recent act of spontaneity was to accompany Brendan on a recent massive 10km swim. That’s a great achievement.
Above: Jo and Jen. Jen remembered she spontaneously did a double and never looked back.
Above: Alan, pictured not being dragged by Bindi, says his favourite spontaneous moment was “being dragged to Queenscliff by Inge and enjoying every minute of it”.
Above:
All the stats:
Temperature (at 6.45am) air: 18
Water temp: 21.3
100 swimmers by 10am (at various start times)
200 swimmers by 1pm
Visibility: Pretty, pretty good
Stingers: 0
Number of people who mentioned the word Bulawayo in a conversation: 2 (may escalate without notice).
Above: Traffic at the point. Please remember to give way to those swimming into the sun to avoid headon collisions.
Above: Anne and Colby. Anne spontaneously drove a different route to the swim and managed to get a parking spot right next to Far West. You can’t fault that for the perfect spot.
Above: Mal spontaneously had this magnifficent Shumba tattooed on his chest a few years ago. Shumba is the Zimbabwean word for Lion. Mal originally comes from the city of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. I grew up in the bush and this was our nearest city!
Above: Lou surprised her brother a few year ago by spontaneously flying to Milan, Italy for the weekend to celebrate his 30th Birthday. Magnifica!
Above: Jeff enjoying an early morning brew. His advice on how to do something spontaneous – “Just smile!” He says that what connects us and strengthens us as a group.
Above: And if you really want do something spontaneous today – take your dog skateboarding.
Wishing our friend Paul McDonald a speedy recovery after he had a nasty encounter with a rogue wave.
I might call it a day there. Unlike the beautiful weather this Typepad blogging sotware is being very uncooperative and crashing on every picture.
I look forward to you adding your acts of spontaneity in the comments section.
Stay healthy and remember it ain’t over till it’s over.

Welcome back Matt and love Sabrina’s flamingo swimming costumes and great swim. Typepad is a chore. Well done for getting a fab blog posted notwithstanding

Awesome blog, Adrian. I didn’t think that shot of Anne and Colby could be bettered, but then you produced a skateboarding dog. I spontaneously went for a dip around 4pm and found the blueys had spontaneously arrived.

My wife and I were on vacation in Manly and spontaneously decided to do an ocean swim event sponsored by Steyne Hotel. I think it was 2002.
We’d never done any real ocean swimming but were competitive swimmers when we were younger so a 2k swim didn’t seem like a real big deal. After many ocean swims over the next 18 years still had to be one of the greatest most fun swims ever. Waves were BIG and they moved the start from near the lifesaving station to Shelly to avoid the waves at the start. Pretty entertaining swimming next to my wife one second and seeing her as high as a house the next as a wave passed by. One of our best ever decisions and opened an interest in ocean swimming ever since.

Thanks Gemma. Hope you did not get stung by the blueys. They were absent in the morning.

Thanks for sharing this memory, Bill. It’s great to read that a holiday in Manly has inspired many years of ocean swimming. Enjoy the waves!
