7 July 2014 – Our first B&B Badge
Hi everyone I’m Lexie aged 8 (9 in September).
So everyone thinks that an early morning start is totally harsh because they need more sleep.
I think it’s an early morning start but definitely worth it because the morning is best part of the day to me for swimming & everything sporty.
and also why it’s worth it is that there are loads of fish and I mean loads!!
I also found that around January & before then I was scared of swimming deep in the ocean but as soon as I started the B&B I wasn’t scared at all. I also have lots of fun swimming so if you’re scared of swimming in the ocean why not have a try? But you don’t have to swim the whole way but why not try to work up to swimming the whole way.
One of everyone’s fave fish is the Blue Groper he is blue & and a little bit yellow
& another usual sea creature is the small but camouflaged Sting Ray but don’t be scared because they always are hidden in the sand so you really need to be concentrating so you can see him.
To wrap things up, I going to tell you why I’m doing my winter badge. You’re probably wondering why I want to get up early & have half my usual breakfast? It’s because every morning I’m psyched to complete the challenge and really it’s not called a challenge because it’s easy! so I try not to think in a negative mind set & get the job done (not saying I don’t like the B&B swim!).So my point is that the B&B is totally fun & challenging!
Here is Wilf the oldest B&Ber with me & my brother Luca
Hi Drink, Lesley & James
Welcome back from your holidays Ian & Happy Birthday Wendy
Today’s newbie is Marese
Hi everyone,
I am Luca, and have turned eleven years old this year.
I have really enjoyed doing my swims for the Winter Badge this year, as it hasn’t been to challenging a swim, yet! I hope all you out there are also enjoying these swims as much as I have been and hope you all make it through 20 swims. This is my first time doing this early-morning challenge, as although we have to wake up early, seeing a beautiful sunrise,
plus an exotic swim is definitely well earned… considering all the challenges of having to wake up and STILL not say ‘no’ and do the swim. I am very happy with my whole family as they are doing this amazing challenge of doing 20 swims during winter.
So far, most of us have done 13 swim so far, which is, therefore, just over half of the swims that we need to do this winter. I am very happy with getting this chance to do this swim, as at this time of day normally I have to catch a seven AM bus to school every school day. I also have enjoy getting to write half of this blog as well.
About two weeks ago, I was swimming with my Dad and as we were nearing Shelly, we started to swimming through an absolutely MASSIVE school of something which I think was Yellow Fin and as we left from Shelly, on the left-hand side of the beach,
I saw the blue groper. It was about roughly ten metres away, just of the seaweed on the rocks. In the morning,
I need to organise myself somehow. I do this by drawing a clock-diagram that shows what needs to be done in the hour.
Here is one below:
Overall I really enjoy doing this insane winter challenge, because it IS a challenge. So far I think I can handle anything above sixteen degrees! because after that, you can call it cold. In the morning when I have to wake up, I always feel tired and sleepy, but I know the difference between sick and tired, so I try and go every morning I can.
Thanks everyone for making this opportunity to join and swim the b&b possible,
Luca & Lexie

Monthly Dinner – Bluewater Cafe, Tuesday 8th July at 6.30 pm
In her early life Valerie Taylor was a champion spearfisher. She switched from killing sharks to filming them when along with husband Ron, she became fascinated with marine life. Ron and Valerie were the first people to film great white sharks without the protection of a cage or anything else during the making of the series Blue Wilderness in 1992. Valerie became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2010 for service to conservation and the environment as an advocate for the protection and preservation of marine wildlife and habitats. Valerie will give a talk about her various experiences with sharks over the years. She will also show a short film on the marine world in Indonesia and how it has changed.
The cost will be only $20 a head and includes shared entrees, a selection of main to choose (incl a vegetarian option) and free corkage (for byo wine only) and a little thank you for the staff.
All beers, wine and deserts are an optional extra at the special price of only $5 each!!

Staying safe
There may not be any waves just at the moment, but are you prepared for their return? Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! Thanks Bloggers!
Love the picture – the way you’ve captured the striking stripes on the fish and the swooshing of the weed.
That organisation clock is brilliant- should hand one out to all newbies to get them started. Maybe a third clock for the night before too? -packing everything in your bag and getting to bed early…

Congratulations Lexie & Luca on a really good blog and especially a big congratulations for undertaking the Winter Challenge and doing so well so far. I loved your underwater drawing and clock too. The photo with Wilf was fantastic. I am sure you will get your badges and am imagining what your B&B hoodies will look like one day with so many badges all over them by the time you are grown. Well done its great to see you both at the swims and well done to Mum & Dad for supporting you.

Lesbubbles, I saw the pelican. And I saw you eyeing the pelican and planning to ambush same. Then I saw the pelican escape. Poor Lesbubbles, not quite stealthy enough for that canny pelican 😮

Great blog Luca & Lexie!
Don’t listen to Lesbubbles. It’s all about the badges!!
Just imagine yourselves walking through Manly with your new winter badges sewn on your cardigans. Passers-by nodding respectfully. Fellow badge owners high-fiving you.
Life will never be the same!!

In Saturdays blog Mary showed some pics of Ludericks behaving in a strange way – see http://pacificjules.typepad.com/.a/6a0133ed6f68df970b01a73de691af970d-popup
I’ve seen Gropers doing this too. I asked the Oz Mus experts what was going on and Amanda Hay said this:
“Hi Guys – Courtship behaviour. You will see fish doing “interesting” things to get the action started. Plus that family spawns in winter, so it makes sense.
As for the Eastern Blue Groper, still not much is known about spawning behaviour, but it is not unlikely they do something similar. Their larvae are most abundant in July so that would make them Autumn/winter spawners.
Cheers, Amanda”

The White house has been in hysterics tonight reading the marvellous blog comments. Thanks everyone for all the laughs and a bit of education on the true meaning behind fish frolicking too.
High five you Wednesday!
