Welcome to Friday, People!
Nick D back here again with another 14 days of pics and stuff and more for you….
First thing …. Today…. If you slept in, this is what you missed…
The usual Friday morning traffic …
The cleanup truck was out again…
Our 8,001st Swimmer this morning! Geoff… welcome 🙂
Some ladies…. two of them!
Turbo is always wondering if he’ll ever find out who’s a good boy…
Multitasking ..
Whales were breaching offshore!
Alan was showing all the ladies his bluebottle sting form yesterday…
How did you go mate? Any dates?
Yep… another great sunny Friday morning
Here’s John, Richard and John.. The Eastern end of Shelly Rebels…
There were a couple of lovely wobbies patrolling the “front lawn”
It’s still mating season in the Bay and in the Aquarium.. so here’s some of our sharks feeling the love…
I’ve added some bits from “50 Shades of Pink” – for the ladies to help put you in the mood…
He rolls taking me with him and we pause for air, our breaths mingling and faces flushed. With my body on top of his I stroke my hand over the sprinkling of stubble, reacquainting myself with every curve and dip of his face. “You are so precious, thank you for taking another chance on me.”
“There are so many things I want to ask you, so many things we still need to work out but we have time and apart from the urgent stuff we’ll catch up along the way. I promise you I won’t run. I don’t want you living your life in fear of what I might do.”
I lodge my head under his chin, my ear to his heart. It’s a place that’s always brought me serenity, my body’s rhythm recognizing and melding with its destined mate’s. I sense that he’s waiting for me to start talking but I can’t help being a little apprehensive, some answers I might not want to hear.
I hug back – hard and close my eyes against the hopelessness I felt over the weekend, thinking that we were over. “I was beginning to lose hope – that you may never take me back and then after I gave you my contract….”
“I know baby. I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight, things in Seoul were a real mess.” He sighs, “I really did want to discuss it with you but it wasn’t something I was prepared to do via e-mail, especially being as distracted as I was.” He shifts so I lift my head off his chest and our eyes find each other.
No wonder this lot are lying around on the bottom..
There’s been a few lovely eagle rays around …
Over the last few weeks there have been sightings of this juvenile green sea turtle in Cabbage Tree Bay. This turtle is believed to be the same one that was released from fishing line entanglement recently. The team at SEA LIFE Sanctuary are currently monitoring the turtle through reports from the public. The turtle is believed to be still injured and is only using 2 flippers to swim with while resting the other 2 injured ones.
If this turtle is seen please call Rob Townsend from Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary on 0404 109 198 and give details of where in the bay it was last sighted – the team from SEA LIFE wish to capture it and give it treatment so it can be successfully released back with a better chance of survival. Please call this number to report any sick or injured marine animals to Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary.
The cormorant swam straight past…
… and this shovel nosed ray (Yep ray).. right out in the middle of the Bay…
The eastern shovelnose ray (Aptychotrema rostrata) is a species of guitarfish, family Rhinobatidae.[1]
The eastern shovenose ray is endemic to subtropical and temperate waters of Australia’s east coast, from off Halifax Bay (Queensland) to Merimbula (New South Wales). It typically lives on the continental shelf, inhabiting sandflats, mudflats and seagrass beds in bays, estuaries, river mouths, around rocky reefs and in surf zones to depths of about 100 m.[2]
Using microspectrophotometry, this species was shown to have three spectrally distinct cone visual pigments with wavelengths of maximum absorbance of 459, 492 and 553 nm, and rods peaking at 498 nm. This suggests this species may have colour vision – perhaps trichromatic.[3]
Betcha didn’t know that!
This one is a male…

Happy birthday Leisa! A good time to repeat the limerick I wrote about Leisa a year or two ago:
Our Leisa’s a swimmer of style
With a beautiful radiant smile.
I’m sure all the guys
At one flash of her eyes
Grow weak at the knees – rank and file!

Hi Everyone,
I’ve left my wetsuit in the shower of the men’s change room at Manly SLSC after the BnB swim this morning (Friday 10th). It’
s a medium Orca sleeveless, red and black colour. I’ve called the surf club to check but it has been taken from the change room.
Thanks, Adrian

PS> I know this is actually a sign that I don’t need the wetsuit anymore 🙂

Great blog Nick. I was completely unaware that Aptychotrema rostrata had cones and rods suggesting the possibility of trichromatic colour vision.
Makes one wonder what else we are missing, what other important gaps exist in our knowledge of the dwellers of the deep.

At what point did John stop paying attention? Around the 6 or 7 thousand mark?
Strong work Nick- tell me, will you be running underwater photography lessons soon? There seems to be a window on Sundays 6-7am?
