05/04/2017 – Trio of Mermaid Birthdays :-)

05/04/201714

Megan, Lisa and Paula all had birthdays today and all these lovely ladies knew the best way to start off a b’day is with a B&B swim! It was a beautiful morning too with a few waves, warm water and Dusky and Cuttlefish sightings. Amazing joy jumper Sophie baked this fantastic cake with swimmers and blue jelly in the middle!

6.25am

My run finished early today so I got to see the Drinks Expressers venture out under a glorious sky. Annie and Rusty try a joy jump!

These two regular swimmers were welcomed back today too from a few weeks away. Martin was sailing and has perfected his pirate look , Michael was convalescing.

Paula and Megan at Shelly.

Blog Tarts, Rainer, Sarah, Sue, me (thanks Derek) and Shane.

Lisa finally gets to the swim after a bit of hassle.

I took loads of photos of her hugs but pushed for time today and have to get the blog out so will have to cut them short! Michael Sheehan aka Thunderbird enjoyed his first swim back after surgery too. He hugs Lisa above.

Here are some of Lisa’s hugs!

The wonderful ‘Women of the Wall’ reunited with their lovely friend!

Megan and the incredible cake Sophie made for her.

As I knew it would be a late blog due to work I loaded all the stuff below Tuesday night. Marine sightings in the last 2 weeks since my last blog…

The Giant Cuttlefish…an incredible creature that we are so lucky to see around this time of year! As they swim quite slowly and aren’t that timid, we can often come across one and swim beside it for quite a while, watching it change colour and texture as it swims over weed, rock and sand. They have 3 hearts, green blood and can grow up to about 1.2 metres long!

The Spotted Wobbegong

Crimson Banded Wrasse

Think these are Pygmy Leatherjackets in the foreground.

So great to see the huge schools of Yellowtail back.

…and of course the Dusky Whalers! Swimmers have reported seeing more than 10 at one time around the point!

Plenty of Blue Groper sightings too!

Did anyone else see this strange creature around 10 days ago? I’ve forgotten the name but we saw them 3 years ago. I almost shoved it down up my cozzie thinking it was a bit of plastic!

It’s fantastic to see an Eagle Ray swimming beneath you. Our son Charlie joined us last week for a swim on Ted’s birthday and he wants to come back very soon after his experience with the Eagle Ray!

Another lovely creature of the deep…Jim Hudson after swimming his 1000 km on Monday!

Spot the fish we see all the time in the painting above…Mullet, Luderick, Mados, Pomfred, Crimson Wrasse, Groper and and Old Wife. Just an ordinary day in Cabbage Tree Bay…

B & B Monthly Dinner– Are you swimming with Elasmobranchs?

The next B&B monthly dinner will be on Tuesday 11th April at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. Our guest speaker on the night will be Sian Liddy, a Marine Science student at the University of New South Wales, who will pose the question: are you swimming with Elasmobranchs?

Sian is looking for citizen scientists to engage with a research program she is running as part of an Internship with the Manly Environment Centre. The research aims to use non-invasive methods to assess elasmobranch biodiversity in the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. So come along to find out how you can be a part of this exciting new project.

The cost of the dinner is only $25 a head and includes shared entrees, a selection of mains to choose (incl a vegetarian option), corkage (for byo wine only). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential:  To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please BOOK HERE NOW.

Have a great week

Lainey
