On our bumpy, beautiful and misty swim this morning I was thinking about Mindset and wondering whether my mind is set. Because I’ve heard when your mind is set on something that’s a good thing. Or is it? Well, maybe maybe not.
In a fixed mindset, you believe your basic qualities, like your intelligence or talent, are fixed and can’t be changed. ‘I was just born that way’ you will hear.
In a growth mindset, you believe your basic ability can be developed through hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all successful people have had these qualities.
A Growth Mindset improves most things in life – careers, sports, relationships and of course swimming.
And when you improve then your brain creates new pathways and recognises this new improved version of you – because that’s who you are now.
We had plenty of Growth Mindsets at the swim this morning.

And of course we celebrated Guy’s birthday today…

My mind is set on one thing – thank you for being a great gang to swim with.

Help country kids learn how to surf!
Each Wednesday in November and Thursdays in December we are looking for volunteers to help Royal Far West’s country kids learn how to surf. These children are from all over the state, for many of them it is their first time to Sydney and for most of them it will be the first time they have surfed! The age range is 9 years to 17 years. . The times are 4pm – 6pm once a week. If you can volunteer some afternoons in that time (it doesn’t have to be every week) please contact Anna Bowden on 89668597 or email annab@royalfarwest.org.au. A working with children check is required

Those two in the sheltered workshop corner – careful or the wind will change.
Well I was in a growth mindset today. Ditched my flippin’ flippers and swam a finless double. This is a big deal for me as I’ve been tethered to my accessories for a long time. Thanks to the constant and excoriating critique… um, no I mean ‘helpful and constructive encouragement’ of top swimmer Inge Close I’ve ditched my snorkel and my fins this year. Go me! My mind is not set. Thanks for the acknowledgement Pete (and the chance to share my story)

As a flipper wearing snorkeller I commend you on your brave accomplishment especially in such tumultuous waters. Well done Shelley!

Thanks Lisa. One of the things I love about this swim is that there is always someone urging you on to extend yourself, to swim a bit better, a bit further (or a bit nuder) than you think you can.

Shelley your adaptability is simply remarkable! Let me see what other tricks can we teach you? No seriously Shelley top marks for ditching the flippers (except what on earth will you throw into the air on our next nudie swim?). And snorkelless as well!
Louise too, has decided to bite the bullet! Remarkable. And now Janet. Go girls! Less is more!
