Grey and bumpy swim this morning, low tide and low vis but still beautiful in its own way as it always is. And it got me thinking about happiness. You know here’s a lot of talk about happiness and its causes. Let’s have a look at that and stay tuned until the end to see how crayfish fit in.
Now there’s a huge body of positive psychology research that is shifting us away from repairing and treating the worst human conditions to a greater emphasis on discovering and building upon positive qualities. So we know what happy people do and we can do the same and be happier? Well, maybe. Its a marginal thing because up to 7o% of how you feel is a result of genetics and life conditions. So we are all working with 30% and that’s OK with me. And what makes the biggest difference to your 30%? Not money not even swimming fast (sorry A team). It’s relationships…quality and quantity. It looks like the B&B has got that covered… great friendships, awesome parenting and long term relationships…
And what else makes us happy? Well it seems having a purpose means a lot, having a sense of meaning and contribution to something bigger than us. And we have lots of people with purpose in our B&B gang. One that you may not be aware of is Operation Crayweed that Dorset Sutton has announced.
Its an Initiative to support marine life regeneration with Crayweed restoration in our Cabbage Tree Bay. Now is ready to commence early in the new year. Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) have done a wonderful job to get this restoration work approved by the Department of Primary Industries and expects there will be opportunities for swimmers to assist in the project. Now I must admit when I first heard this news I was only half excited…the really exciting thing about Crayweed is that its what Crayfish eat…
So when we go for a swim we see crayfish in the Bay…yeh. Ask Dorset to find out more or visit the Operation Crayweed webpage for more details http://www.operationcrayweed.com/. I’ve asked Dorset to pencil me in as one of the divers but there’s lot’s of roles so check it out.
Now that’s a purpose worth being happy about.

Pauline’s Annual Gogglebox Sale
Yes, it’s that time of year again. Every year about this time, Pauline gets sick of all the lost property junking up her car, so she sorts it all out and sells it at bargain prices, just to get rid of it. This year the sale will be next Saturday 15th December, so get there early to get the best gear. Goggles, swimsuits and other swimming paraphernalia will be on sale from 6.15 am, so if you have lost any gear through the year, come early and buy it back before someone else does. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Royal Far West.
Summer Swim Badges
As the Summer long distance swimming season approaches, it seems appropriate to explain what it takes to earn a Summer badge. Three long distance swims are on offer:
- The 6 km swims are held every summer Saturday morning starting with the 7 am swim. The first 6 km swim will be on Saturday 1st December.
- There is a 10 km swim once a month over summer also starting with the 7 am swim. Dates for these will be announced in the blog. The first will be on December 8th.
- If these swims are too long for you, you can try a Triple Manly to Shelly swim any day during Summer (distance 3.5 km) from 6.30or 7 am.
Please note, Badges will be awarded to swimmers completing any and/or all of the 3 swims at the times and dates stated above and throughout the Summer months.
You will earn a badge if you complete these swims and log them in iLog. The system will only record authorised 6K or 10K swims that are logged on the appropriate days. Badges will be presented at the Summer Badge Ceremony in March. If you are unsure of the routes and protocols for these swims, please ask at the desk before you swim. When swimming these longer distances, we request that, for safety reasons, you stay with the group. We also request that you do not swim in dangerous conditions. The quest for a little cloth badge is not worth putting your life at risk. Enjoy your swimming.
