21/06/2011 – Winter Solstice Swim

June 21, 201128

90 ‘ticked’ Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

Fantastic turnout for a Tuesday and for the shortest day of winter.

Unfortunately we had the first nor-easterly wind that we’ve had for ages, so the water was a little choppy and the wind chill was in full force but it didn’t deter our hardy swimmers who were all set to celebrate the winter solstice in style, some truely hardy souls without wetsuits 🙂

The sunrise was beautiful and we
all gathered, holding hands to form a large circle off the point for a chorus of “you are my sunshine” which was beautifully harmonised I must say… 😉

We then enjoyed, or was that endured, a bumpy swim to Shelly Beach and back for our well earned swimmer-made cakes.

All the delicacies were delicious !! Annette Willows baked a fruit cake, Cathie Coleman baked choc chip cookies, James Goins cooked his signature dish the pecan pie, Jane Stevenson baked blueberry muffins, Maureen Rath
baked cute little pink cup cakes and croqueted a new B&B tea cosy for us, Michael Christie baked date and sultana cookies and Peter Wood baked his signature dish, baklava, I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone ??

Maureen and Annette also made very cute pink santa hats, which they were wearing, I hope someone has a photo ??

WOW, what a morning, it was so much fun with a truly super bunch of people, I feel totally
blessed that within B&B we really do have just the nicest group of people that all just love being together and enjoying the ocean and each other, it’s really very special 🙂

After the healthy breakfast everyone will now either be super productive today or asleep as they come down from the sugar rush.

Sheri Deacon and Peter Bowes bought Michael  and I a winter solstice present, beautiful soft and fluffy hot pink beanies, thanks guys !  As you can see
from the photos they are seriously a hit and I think we’ll have to get them embroidered and make them available as part of the B&B ‘uniform’ 🙂

Linda Goodwin reckons she was sooo cold after celebrating in style and swimming wetsuitless that it was acceptable to steal the water bottle from Sheri and Peter’s unborn baby… ! And there I was saying we were all a great bunch of people who are all so considerate of each other… 😉

Thanks to Jalna Horn for taking these fabulous photos, the first four in this blog, which beautifully capture the morning, thanks Jalna !

I think there were lots more fabulous photos and videos taken today, as they come through throughout today I will put them up on the random images page of the website which you can check out by clicking here.

To check out who swam today,
and to see how you and your friends are tracking in the winter badge challenge don’t forget you can click on the two images to the left of this blog at any time.

Nick Careless passed on a message to us all that a world record was made in Wales today, the largest group of nude swimmers, 400 ! Apparently a challenge B&B might want to take on… When we work out the wardrobe logistics of taking the cossies off in the water, waving them in the air, then redressing in the water, oh and no goggles
of course, I think we could smash the record 😉

Happy birthday to Penny Verdich today 🙂

Water Temperature 18.0 degrees.
Air Temperature 12 degrees.
Sunrise 7.00am.
Sunset 4.54pm.
Low Tide: 6.17am.
High Tide: 12.25pm.

How about this for a previous solstice swim photo… who’s B&B bottom is it and what year was it taken ???

I must be the first to post to redeem myself – yes i swam wetsuitless as requested (one of a few that read that email obviously) but as i was sooooooooooooooooooo cold and uncontrollably shivering Sheri kindly OFFERED me her hot water bottle that Michael kindly filled with warm water.
I did not steal or snatch the hot bottle from Sheri and Pete’s unborn baby, who I am sure was as snug as a bug in a rug.
Sheri kindly OFFERED me the hot water bottle and who am I to refuse that kind offering. I would have worn the new teapot cosy aswell if it had been big enough for my head!!!
    Bring back the wetsuit……..

Linda, Linda, now surely you know we can’t let the truth get in the way of a good story now… !
Sheri has booked the unborn baby into therapy so it doesn’t grow up being traumatised from the experience, so it should all be ok, there’s no need to feel guilty 😉

The pink beanies- thanks Sheri and Pete, they were fabulous. If only I could have stolen that hot water bottle ahead of Linda it would have been perfect.
What a great swim, with a great bunch of people and with fantastic nibblies for breakfast. Thank you all for being there, it was the highlight of the winter, maybe even of the year.

Here’s the video of the nude Wales swim from yesterday!
    http://youtu.be/SZbI2TEVNSM
Looks like you may need to start nude on the beach – or maybe we could do a deepwater start for the Not So Bold & Beautiful!!
    Was the organiser Gemma’s sister?
A lot didn’t even get waist deep.

Enjoyed our swim to celebrate the winter solstice despite the bumpy conditions. A big thank you to all those thoughtful people who the made the lovely treats for breakfast. I think an embroided B&B beanie is a great idea.

I think Baby Bowes will thank me for a heads up on what he/she is heading for as soon as he/she comes of swimming age!

Gosh, 9 – Happy Birthday Pocket, shame she didn’t get to enjoy some of the treats this morning. Does she have a B&B jacket like Poppies yet ??

Stephen, surely it’s Beautiful but not so Bold! Technically are you nude if you’re wearing a pink cap? Maybe that can be our defence at Manly Court. Thanks to all the bakers for the tasty treats this morning. Anna, this is the song that I was trying to play for you on my ipod http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkNbMZhEGEw

Thanks for the full version of the song Brendan, do you think they would like us to help them with their vocals as clearly we sounded much better… 😉

That really looked like quite an event in Wales. They must be a very uninhibited lot over there.

It’s ok Linda, Baby B is going to have to be a tough nut with Pete and I as its parents. You needed the hot water bottle more than anyone this morning.
    Long live the wetsuit!!!
