Tues 15th: Hamilton Isle’s Whitehaven Swim Race

November 15, 20168

News Updates

If you go to Hakan’s cafe, you will have to be patient.  It’s becoming extremely popular, and he’s the only barista – going as fast as he can

Queensland last weekend

About 40 to 50 of us went to the Whitsundays for the Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim event …

Qld Social Notes

It was great fun sharing a room with Ken

———–

Cammeray’s Manly Express was there to play and race hard.  They’d hit Saturday’s Hamilton Island Triathlon as well!

———-

Instead of tapering, several pink caps just kept on swimming all weekend …

———

And one of them actually got stung by a Box Jelly on Saturday.  La became quite ill, well into Saturday evening … but fronted up fit for race day

————

Transport all over island is by golf carts only: Clair, Kendelle, Ali and Bianca

———–

My roommate looks exotic in this tropical scene …

———–

Putting the race stickers on was part of the fun, after opening our bags of competitors’ goodies …

———

I have never seen such a stunning seaside building as the six-y-old yacht club.  Karen Perks and Kendelle Murphy …

———

Having knitter Jo in the ‘hang-out’ unit helped keep things serene prior to race day  🙂

Saturday evening sunset drinks on One Tree Hill – with Steve P, Jo and Simon Cowell, and Matt.  Amazing views!

Race Day Conditions
Stormy forecasts canceled Whitehaven, and event was shifted to Catseye Beach in central Hamilton Island.
Water:  26º (Treacley.  I found it oppressive swimming)
Air:     Stinking hot
Salt:     We could notice the higher salt content and extra buoyancy
Jellies:  La’s box jelly strike was the first report for some 18 months.  She’s now my heroine
Tides:   2-3 metres.  Waterline receded some 15 feet during races  (kids 350 m, 750m and two km feature)
Vis:     Not too good.  (Trust me – our Manly Beach is sublime)

—————

Although the green caps women started two minutes later, Clair was carving the blue caps men up by halfway mark in two km feature event

———-

Matt Hayes (left) and John Cunningham making their turn at halfway point

———-

Two shots of Jo our knitter

——–

Kenny aka Smurf

———–

Steve Perks had goggle problems on first loop, and was glad of the short sand run  – to check and adjust

————

Bianca (left) and Fifi …

———-

Basically, Barb is always happy!

————–

Post races: Glad to be back under the shade of the palms!

Results

There were several Olympic swimmers at event to add celebrity status …

———–

Manly Express with Susie O’Neill

———-

Eight (Yes … EIGHT) Manly Pink Caps were called onto the dais for podium finishes.  We couldn’t believe it!  What a bewdy!!!

———

So then we drank beer in the marquee …

————-

While the man played on.  A fab weekend indeed   🙂

Today’s Swim

Sunrise:  Red sky in the morn
Water:   20º
Jimbles:  11 (halfway between Point and Tardis yacht)
Vis:    Getting pretty good now
Moon:  Nil  (Too much cloud)

Ayesha grew up in County Cork.  I mention a few bods from here may be swimming in some sort of city swim – in River Liffey, Dublin.  “I wouldn’t be doing that.  It’s full of rats and shopping trolleys.”

—————–

Dan and Stu.  “Where are you guys from?

“Just there,” pointing the the units on beachfront.

———-

Windmilling warm-ups …

————–

Noteworthy locals …

Memorial Swim for Ed Selby
7 a.m. this Saturday 19th November
• in accordance with Ed’s wishes •
Members of his family will join us and it will probably be at Shelly Beach at 7.20 a.m. with a swim/paddle out, casting of ashes and hopefully some music.  Our very own ukelele band may play.  Please bring flower petals and wear a bright cozzie if you have one.  If anyone can help with a way to play ‘Disco Inferno’ by The Tramps at Shelly, please let us know.  (Enquiries to Lainey)  Everyone welcome.

Legends all! You did us pink caps proud, not only in the swimming biz but also in the having-a-blast-while-at-it category. PS I’m trusting the Baird caption was a typo??
