Thursday 3 October: Hope is the best of things

03/10/20196

Us swimmers are a hopeful lot. We hope for not too much bump, not too chilly water, and nothing stingy.  And we got it this morning – perfect conditions. When you think about it, hope is the beginning of every good thing in our lives. It always believes for the best, even in the face of the worst circumstances. And when you have hope for the future you begin feeling better right away. It helps you clarify what you want from your life and gives you the fuel to get there. Hope has been found to heal, improve relationships and even help athletes swim faster. It seems like we should do all we can to cultivate hope. It makes everything you are hoping for more likely. You could say it’s the secret sauce that adds all the flavour to your life.

In my favourite movie, Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne is sent to Shawshank Prison for a murder he didn’t commit. He realizes there is something deep inside your body that people can’t touch or get to – hope. Andy becomes friends with prison fixer Red who argues hope is a dangerous thing. Its a movie about a man who hopes and one wo doesn’t. After years of torture Andy escapes and sends Red a postcard saying,

‘Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.’

Here are a few of our swimmers who made it down to enjoy a swim.

Here’s hoping for another great swim tomorrow.

Yes a great reminder that where there is hope there is life…or is it the other way round? I am hoping to get back to the B&B and beautiful sea when I kick this wretched cough. Missing the cheerful mornings with friends and the energy boost which makes me feel that everything is possible in this “best of all possible worlds”(Voltaire/Candide).
