This morning was still a little lumpy with some nice wave sets to make our morning swim out from Manly Beach a little interesting. Water temperature was a lovely 19.3 – thanks John, our resident temperature taker – we like that one, can we keep it around here for the rest of winter?
Everyone was rugged up nice and warm and full of smiles.
John Bond and John Bryan couldn’t wait to get out there.
The biggest topic of discussion was the encounter with a grey nurse shark yesterday. Despite some reports that it was a bronze whaler, I’m reliably informed that it was definitely an endangered grey nurse – which is able to be distinguished by the two fins. While some were a little hesitant, Lainey and a few others were hoping that they would see it again today. Doing some research I found some interesting facts:
- The male Grey Nurse bites the female during courtship
- Mating generally occurs around autumn and the young are born the following winter
- Towards the end of the gestation period, the more fully developed embryos eat the less developed embryos and unfertilised eggs within the female shark’s uterus so only two pups are produced per litter
- It was the first protected shark in the world when it was listed under NSW legislation in 1984
Penny offered lots of information about how to tell the different types of sharks and how a grey nurse. The Grey Nurse is not aggressive and is no longer considered a dangerous species. It mainly feeds on schooling fish.
John Bond – again, this time with Bernhard and Dorsett, who is filling in while upper management is away and lower middle management is recovering from surgery – we hope you have a speedy recovery and you’re back swimming with us again soon Sean.
Fiona and Michael are regulars from the Balance and UTS Tri Club. They are both currently training hard for the world championships being held in Rotterdam in September. We have plenty of other triathletes swimming with us from Warringah, Northern Suburbs and Balmoral tri clubs who will also be competing – we wish you every success and a great injury-free lead up to the event.
Lainey was lucky enough to find our friend and captured it again this, this morning.
John Bond again, with a perfect high elbow – comes from years of experience
Lyndall saw our lucky visitor yesterday, she reckons it was huge and she wasn’t hanging around.
Dorsett filling in lower middle-management duties…

Michael says there were plenty of dusky’s and other things to see out there today.
All in all another great swim and it was so much warmer in the water than out.
Even when the weather is not so nice remember.

Important notice! TRIVIA NIGHT 2017
Most years we have a highly attended, memorable and much loved Trivia Night at The Steyne Hotel. This year’s is on 18th July at 6.30pm with a great meal, John Kelly’s wit and charm in comparing the trivia, lots of fun and merriment. The theme is ‘Nautical’ or rather ‘Naughty- cal’!!! (Think saucy pirate wenches, Johnny Depp take-offs, sexy sailors, mermaids and mermen. You could even come as a randy Cuttlefish!) It’s only $30 per person and you can book a table with friends or we can sort you out with lovely swimmers on a friendly table. There will be raffles, prizes, silent auction so if you please have anything you can contribute please let Roz Beaver, Janet Franks or myself know. We already have Sydney Sail days donated, nights at Whale Beach B&B, original artworks, signed sports jerseys, mounted marine life photos and would appreciate anything you can offer! We are raising money for Dr Ray’s charity Australians for Women’s Health which desperately needs a women’s hospital built in the poorest part of Nepal.
Roz has been working tirelessly to get the ticket booking system up and running so click on this link to book.
