02/11/2012 – Speedy Southerly Soup

02/11/201217

107 Bold & Beautiful swimmers

A gorgeous morning, if you stay out of the wind.

Yeh, Paul M is back 🙂

Lovely to see Louise K (damaged Graham’s Sister) up from Melbourne again 🙂

That’s so sweet of you to don your favourite necklace for your morning swim with us Cathie.  Just so you know, it doesn’t go unnoticed 😉

Elaine K thought it only appropriate I take a photo of her if I was taking photo of the pretty ladies this morning.  Fair call 🙂

Who flicked the switch !??  The water temperature dropped 1.5 degrees over night 🙁

It’s not only Michael’s thermometer that can detect such a change.  Our delicate bodies can too and really Mr Ocean, once you’re on your way up, we’d appreciate it if you’d stay there !

The change in temperature didn’t change the in shore trough, that’s still in full swing.  It’s a significant drop and then you find yourself in ankle deep water again.

Beautiful at the point

and the only splash across the bay are the ones created by us.  With a southerly wind we are beautifully sheltered by North Head in our lovely little corner 🙂

Great to see Jonny S back this morning, you know there’s no jimbles in the water if Jonny’s there 🙂

Proof that despite how much Lesley would like to be last without her flippers, she’s just not 😉

15 swimmers had a great swim up to Queensie for the Bolderdash this
morning, can’t quite say the same for the way back though as they had a
fair bit of chop and current working against them.  Not that is bothered
them, all were back in plenty of time to join in the 7 o’clocker to Shelly if they wanted to, which 5 of them did !

The conditions must have been strong, as for Richard and Simon (who are both experienced ocean swimmers) their morning’s statistics were: Manly -> Queenscliff 19 mins, Queenscliff break 7 mins, Queesncliff -> Manly 28 mins (against the Southerly wind and swell).

Some lovely Bolderdash photos from Simon

Including one that he took from Bluewater, if you enlarge the photo (click on it) you can see the rest of us gathered at Shelly at 7.23am 🙂

Michael and Paige looking very bright and fresh after swimming both the Bolderdash and Shelly swim in no wetsuits

A few swimmers also enjoyed the early Shelly lap and 3 the double afterwards.

Miles however had a swim free morning today, but he still joined us for brekkie
🙂  Not sure if it was to make up to Lesley for his heartless
performance yesterday, or whether it was to tell us about his exciting
swim from Bradley’s Head to Manly Wharf tomorrow, or most likely, ‘cos he just couldn’t face a day without us.  Yep, pretty sure that was it 😉

Lucy’s suitably impressed with Graham’s patchwork after his incident where he swapped his bike for the bitumen a couple of mornings ago 🙁

Good luck to everyone who is competing / participating in the Triathlon and the ocean swim up at Noosa this weekend.

One of our swimmers, Rob Rowe is having a garage sale tomorrow, 3rd November from 8am-12 midday at 2 James Street Manly.  Household items, Furniture, office furniture, designer chairs, plants.  Big stuff, little stuff it all has to go, plus he’s pretty sure a B&B swimmer will be able to twist his arm 😉

Water Temperature 18.0
Air Temperature 15.0
Sunrise 5.55am
Sunset 7.23pm
High Tide: 10.18am
Low Tide: 4.50pm

Considering all the trouble you had taking the photos, Simon, they are really good! It was quite amusing seeing you try to shoot as you disappeared down in the troughs between the waves! Great work.
I cursed the whole way back in that chop, but my swim was made more pleasant by my companion The French Man, especially when we spotted a very nice fiddler ray which distracted us from being smashed in the faces. 😉

Paige thanks for the company up and back with the Bolderdash this morning. It was lovely to have someone to swim alongside of.
Did you notice there was quite a considerable ‘chop’ on the way back???
Also no one has mentioned all the jellies and plankton. It was like swimming through thick stew nearly the whole way until you got back nearly to Manly. Any decent whale could have made a great meal out of it!![I was thinking that as I was swimming]
PLUS [I’m a bit verbose today – sorry] it was a great feeling to see all those pink caps at Queenscliff. Thanks everyone for waiting, it was really appreciated.

Check Lesley, definitely pink caps behind.I think I can identify the person with the watch to the right in photo.

Welcome Bert from Germany who joined us last week and did his first second lap with us today.
Michael, your not trying to teach Paige how to body surf.

Michael – THANKS for always being my swimming partner! It’s always such a relief to be able to see another person when I’m really dragging behind everyone else – I know you wait for me! I hope you’ve warmed up by now!
And I definitely noticed a bit of “chop” on the way back – I think I drank about two gallons of saltwater since I can only breathe on the left!

Whale report – friend of mine (yes I do have friends albeit not many) saw two whales breeching off the Bommie at Queenscliff last night (6.45pm) while surfing. Am sure they will be back to eat that plankton Michael was talking about

You’re right on all counts Jules. I did come this morning to boast about tomorrow’s 10km swim across the world’s most picturesque shark-infested harbour, AND to dry-hump my fave B&B-ers, AND to grovel to Lesley for deserting her yesterday. Problem is that no-one really seemed to care about my swim (except for Michael, who sounded like Ernest Hemingway with his tales of big fish in Chowder bay), Nicky Brake managed to slip through my net before I could register more than a blip on the dry-humpometer, and Lesley met my heart-felt apology with a sneer that suggests she’s seen through my thin veneer of sincerity to the very bottom of my black soul. Lesley my love, would a dry-hump help? I’ve got one I haven’t used.

Thanks Fiona, it was quite an epic swim back indeed and it was great to have someone to swim along with!
Spotting that Fiddler ray was impressive as it was the same colour as the sand.
I also saw a Porcupine fish just as we gathered at the point before the Bolderdash. I had no idea they would venture so far away from the protection of the reef. Maybe it was the same that Lesley spotted a couple of days ago?

True Michael, so much plancton! I shared your thinking of what a great meal it would be for a whale while I was swimming too 😉
We almost did not wait for you, until I told Simon “Oh wait, there are two more coming our way!” — “Where?” — “There, behind that wave!”
It was quite hard to see anything in that swell.

haha!! mmmm it’s never dry with you Miles! BUT I did accept your apology :-DD I can understand yr not wanting to wait and wait and wait…it’s cold out there!!

Well, believe it or not but some of us did wait for you yesterday Lesley! Truth is we swam back as soon as you arrived though ; )

Goodluck all the Noosa competitors. Same goes to the ‘Frosty Nuts’ & little ‘Squirrels’.
Hey Graham, hope you were wearing your helmet. Will sew your badges if you want to bring your jacket down. Oh, I’m sure I could manage to sew an elbow or knee while I’m at it.

According to MSW its going to be flat tomorrow [0.2m]
And the wind will have dropped from gusts of nearly 60kph to about 16!
AND its supposed to be sunny.
All things considered it could be a great morning!!

Well, there’s still going to be a South 6.5ft@10s swell. Shelly will be protected, especially with the light wind, but Queensie could still have a decent wave. Especially when coupled with the incoming South groundswell (2.5ft@17s at 6 am).
    Bolderdash Michael? 🙂
