27/01/2014 – Swimmers, are you ready for your next challenge?

27/01/201411

Are you thinking that the last day of holidays is the end of the excitement for summer?  Do you need a little motivation to get you into the water?  Perhaps you need to participate in this massive challenge commencing in February that will have you seeing red.

In support of Heart Research Month, the B&B – as a team – is going to attempt to swim a massive 6,000 kilometres during February.  That part is a piece of cake!  Based on today’s swim we will do that in just two weeks!  The real challenge is to raise one dollar per kilometre swum for the RedFeb Relay.

And there is the opportunity for celebrity status too!!

Having signed on as the first community partner with the pledge of 6,000 kilometres, the Heart Research Australia team will put our ugly mugs on Breakfast TV! Tentatively scheduled for Monday 3rd February (that is next week), and to kick start Heart Research Month, the TV crew with Dr Andrew Rochford will be following our swim. For this day only, we will have special RED caps!!

BUT we need to get cracking getting friends, family, neighbours, work mates, etc to get behind us by pledging support with some dollars.  Click here to share this link via Facebook, LinkedIn, email or courier pigeon so we will show what a socially minded, committed bunch we are.  Also, so when asked live TV of how much money we have raised we won’t be embarrassed!

So, give yourself or rustle up some supporters, then turn up next Monday (to be confirmed via the blog)

So, what happened today!  Well we had the usual massive turnout of 336 swimmers; including 31 newbies!!

Waves were just big enough to hit you in the face while you were simultaneously dodging the seaweed as it slithered between your thighs.

And big congrats as everyone waited at the point!!  It was a beautiful sight.

But whoever is out there making those rogue “let’s go” calls – be warned the integrity police are on the prowl.

A rousing celebration at Shelly for Krystyna’s 40 thing Birthday before we headed back to scare the daylights out of the little garfish and yellow tails enjoying their morning swim.

Avoiding the pumice is interesting.  Some pieces are huge and really hurt if you run into them.  There are also ‘things’ attached to them.  Handle with care as one swimmer who came too close developed a very painful rash!!

No sight of the dusky whalers today, but Maxine spotted a turtle near half way.  The rest of the sightings were the lovely regulars.

The birthday girls enjoying cake and coffee post swim.

Have a great day

B&B i-log

Now that the new work year has kicked in, save time and be ever so efficient, by using the B&B i-log.  It’s a smart phone friendly website so no need to download, just bookmark it.  There are so many good reasons to use the B&B Login – like no queues, no need for glasses to find your name, never missing the 7am call, and you can do it on the bus or ferry on the way to work.

Log your swim ANYTIME that day for an easy way to ensure your swim is recorded in the daily attendance and on the Pacific Challenge. To get started, send an email to Ian Forster (ugoboyo@gmail.com). He will check that your email address is activated on the attendance register then send you info on how to get started

Summer badge swims

Every Saturday during summer there will be a 6km swim – usual route is to Freshwater and back; then once a month there is a 10km swim – this is to South Curl Curl and back.  However, the final route depends on conditions that day so it is a good idea to arrive a little early to have a briefing from the designated swim leader.  Both swims kick off at 7am.

The proposed date for the next 10km swim is 15 February depending on conditions.   This date will depend on final confirmation of local surf carnivals so keep checking the blog for updates.

Bolderdash

This daily swim to Queenscliff and back DEPARTS the surf club at 5.50am.  As these are generally intimate groups, please WAIT for everyone in the water before heading off.  Do buddy up with someone – great to be with someone who has the same pace – that way everyone is ‘accounted for’ at Queenscliff.

Staying safe

Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly!  While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf.  To read, or even download, click here.
