🦈SHARKEY FACTS- THE BIG 3 …
A few us from BnB attended a fascinating presentation by Marcel Green the leader of the shark program, NSW Dept of fisheries & Forestries. This department exists to implement govt policies & gathers facts on shark habitats & behaviours from their own research & in conjunction with Australian universities & others worldwide.
The facts below were gathered from BnB attendees as I didn’t take notes unfortunately. They are in random order. Hoping you find them interesting & thought provoking.
- 🦈In the Sydney/Manly area the big 3 that have the main interactions are Great Whites, Tigers &Bull sharks.
- 🦈Great whites & Tigers remain off- shore locally year round but Bull sharks depart when the water temperature drops to about 20degC. Their season is approx Nov to May, varying with water temp, rainfall, fish prevalence.
- 🦈Great whites from Qld to WA actually belong to the one population with mature adult sharks inhabit waters from SA-WA and the juvenile & teenage populations prevalent along the east coast from Eastern Vic-Qld.
- 🦈Sharks are a bit like teenagers – not following rules & unpredictable.
- 🦈Sharks don’t hunt people, we enter their territory.
- 🦈Bull sharks are more active at night.
- 🦈Over the past 10 yrs there have been 1,000 sharks detected around the Northern Beaches area & 38,000 on the northern NSW rivers areas where some tagged sharks are so frequently recorded that locals have given them names!!!
- 🦈50 drones have been used this year on NSW patrolled beaches with more coming next year
