30/09/2011 – F F F Frightfully Freezing

September 30, 201116

64 ‘ticked’ Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

9 hardy sould enjoyed or was it endured a Bolderdash this morning. It was definitely colder that they expected.

Those beautiful early photos are courtesy of James Goins, although Richard Agius was the camera handler for the group shot at Queensie. Does he know where that camera is holstered ?

Brendan Maher was speechless by the time he had swum both swims in without a wetsuit.

Apart from the temperature it was a lovely calm swim, the best of the week. At least we all got to swim to and from the beach and watch the Port Jackson’s resting below us 🙂

Jane Stevenson had an expensive swim loosing her goggles and one flipper ! Uhmm, and I said it was a calm swim !?

Tim’s fact of the day: “A scallop has 35 blue eyes.”

Our steak and trivia night is promising to be a great fun filled night with tables filling up fast and prizes very generously being donated by our sponsors and supporters.

To check out the tables please click here.

To check out the prizes so far please click here.

Water Temperature 16.5 degrees and that’s with Michael’s thermometer so realistically 15.6… ok I’m ducking for cover now 😉
Air Temperature 9.5 degrees.
Sunrise 5.34am.
Sunset 5.56pm.
High Tide: 10.00am.
Low Tide: 4.29pm.

    C-c-c-c-coldest swim ever!
Didn’t feel it on the Bolderdash but half way to Shelly I lost the ability to cup my hands and keep my fingers together… still half an hour driving with the aircon turned up to 25 degrees sorted me out.
    Loving the photo at Queenscliff…

Not so calm at that moment when I was sitting in shallow water trying to get my flippers off! Bad timing. I’m just going in to look for them now, but if anyone finds a blue and yellow flipper and a pair of View goggles washed up would you please keep them for me tomorrow?

A 20 minute hot shower thawed me out…The coldest bit for me was just heading to the Q. headland when that arctic current sneaked by, and in the wind when I got out. I was shivering on the inside!
That was a great moment in that ray of sun bobbing below the cliffs there….

This is going to reveal my inappropriate level of childishness, but someone else ticked me off today as I was too wet and shivering, and I havent been “boxed” on the pacific game page. I’m trying my best to catch up! 🙂

Yes, it was a cold swim indeed this morning. With such a huge improvement in the sea condition over yesterday, I hadn’t given due respect to the water temp until about halfway back from Queensie when my hands went numb, I started to do “The Vulcan Stroke” and my catch was all but gone. Limped home and up the ramp to that warming welcome that only the pink platoon can deliver. Does anyone else do the Vulcan?

The same happened to me with the hands at exactly the same time on teh way to Shelly! Sandy said she had the same experience.
Not often I am left speechless. although to be strictly accurate, I was trying to speak, it was just that words weren’t coming out!

Definitely had my first ‘face freeze’ today since beginning of winter!! and temp was MOST definitely around the 15 mark!
I love the photo of the wave hitting the 3 swimmers – priceless facial expression on person in middle – is it Anna?
The photo at Queenscliff could be a good calender photo yeah? Looks like James has really long arms!! all the better to swim with 😉

It happens in cold swims when you lose feeling in your fingers and hence also muscle control over them. The Vulcan comes lurking in times like this. Without command over your fingers, you cannot keep them closed or cup them when you attempt to catch water in your stroke. As you move your numb hands through the water, the lifeless fingers hopelessly open up in a V shape, you are literally powerless to close them and your stroke efficiency is greatly reduced.
V is for Vulcan. Swim long, and prosper.

I also do the Vulcan, at first I thought ‘old age’ had crept in. Had face, teeth & gum freeze this morning, thankfully could still manage to chat @ the point.
    Go Manly & Collingwood !!!!!!

I went all vulcan half way to shelly and started to get a bit panicky… a stiff dose of “toughen the f*ck up” later I pulled it together and accepted my stroke would go to hell!!
