(An open letter to some mates)
Woke up 0615 to the sounds of pitter patter. Cold hard enough to face but rain is daunting as well. Surf Club crowd awaiting, encouraging. Looks like over 40 of them today. Water still 18.6. In at 7 sharp. Cold core until the point, then all of the sudden the brain tells the body it is actually warm. Tractor beamed to Shelley in the bubblestream of a fin wearer. As usual it’s 2-3 degrees colder than the rest of the bay! Standing there, teeth clacking, talking in percussion to Rowan Webb who sported a wetsuit. We shiveringly stay there to await all swimmers arrival then as soon as last one arrives bang goes Jules’ pistol voice (Okayyyyyyyyletsgooooo). Return trip – happy to leave the cold waters of Shelley behind. Feels warmer midbay. On the heels of flying finner. Passed him at the shed but only he knew where the gap was in the outgoing rip off Manly LSC, and he bested me with fin torque and correct navigation. Navigation still not my strong point. In at the beach I pop up for pressing of the flesh and intro, as you do, and thanks for the sprint. We know each other now. He did not have the recognisable stroke of other swimrades but he was fast. I’d see him at coffee culcha after. Straight for the 20 cent hot showers. See you Monday – it is supposed to be between nada and uno degrees! Don’t know how you would go setting it up, but suggest you blokes try to get down for one of these. The cost is attractive. TJim
