Over 104 Bold & Beautiful swimmers.
3 swimmers; Alex, Iain and Gaetan tackled an early lap up to Queensie and back to make sure there weren’t any stingers for us 😉
There was however a beautiful tropical jellyfish suspended off the point. It sure looks beautiful and apparently they don’t sting but we weren’t game to find out.
It was a fun but pretty lumpy swim today so a few group hugs were shared… 😉
Lucy and Maurern swam without flippers this morning – both inspired by Neil. Fantastic, well done 🙂
It’s good to have you back in the water Stephen, thanks for today’s first photo.
Thanks for today’s title Sandy inspired as you swam along watching swimmers through all the bubbles 😉
Sadly there was the head of a dusky whaler on the wall as we arrived today, obviously left by fishermen. Very sad indeed. A photo was taken and sent off so it has been reported. The bay is a no-take aquatic marine reserve so if you see fisherman please report it asap before they get a chance to harm or catch any of the marine life.
Also, Fiona collected the remnants of two balloons. As you can see below they would look like blue bottles floating on the surface to any hungry turtle, but turtles don’t do so well with balloons, so please if you see balloons or any other debris on your swims it would be great if we can collect it.
A newsletter was sent out last night, so please have a quick flick through, it covers our Australia Day Swim, the Harbour and the 10km swim this Saturday…!!
Manly Wine need an idea of numbers so please let us know if you are planning to attend the special $10 brekkie on Australia Day, which will be an egg & bacon roll or muesli with a tea or coffee (FW or LB only) to ensure everyone gets served quickly. To confirm please click here.
Check out the great photo below of Brendan’s horse, Sunsets On Fire, winning at Ipswich last Friday in the beautiful B&B coloured racing silks !! Congratulations Brendan 🙂

Great news for the 10km swimmers this coming Saturday…
Robert and Karen Grozier are going to join in on their SUP board and kayak. Karen’s kayak has storage space too, so the teddy bears picnic can be carried in their if need be !! So please bring the sustenance that you would like to the start, before 7am. Thanks guys. Dave, Gaetan, Michael and all the other 10km swimmers will be seriously grateful to have you along. Thank you !!

A quick reiteration.
Don’t forget
1. Julie’s birthday tomorrow. So a few goodies floating around at Brekkie.
2. Next Saturday and probably Sunday, the swims will be in the harbour due to Manly carnival.

Great shots of the jellyfish!! Glad to hear there are no blueys. Have noted Michael’s reiterated points as well. Back tomorrow from spiny purgatory

I’m putting my hand up to help out with the 10km ‘teddy bears picnic’. Will bring sunscreen & carry whatever needed. What’s the location of the picnic.
Great swim today.

Regarding the dead dusky, the head was found on the beach on the beach close to the ramp which is really where the reserve starts. So it could be a legal catch.

Mark from OzMuseum checked with his friend at Fisheries and they are not illegal to catch (assuming methods are legal). Whites and grey nurses are of course protected but the poor little dusky whaler isn’t covered.
Swim to QC was choppy this morning (just like yesterday!) and it’s not gonna be much different tomorrow according to magicseaweed. Wind should be light in the morning though so should be ok. There were a few stingy things around, but nothing to worry about.
As for saturday 10km swim, i recommend everyone wears flippers as they seem to be the sea urchin protection needed to get out at Quarantine beach, James can confirm 🙂
Great photo of the jelly fish, very cool!!!

Mark from OzMuseum received this feedback on this morning’s jellyfish from his colleague, Stephen Keable, the marine invertebrates collection manager:
The internal cross visible through the bell is one of the distinctive features of Catostylyus mosaicus – very common around Sydney in summer, can occur in ‘swarms’. Reports are variable about stings from this but best left alone!

Hmm..that does seem like a slightly ambiguous boundary. Poor little dusky, it just seems so suspicious to find the remains right there where they were. And it did look pretty professionally hacked off, that head. Horrible.
Howvere, those jellyfish images are fantastic. And so were all the beautiful fish this morning.
Oh and Maureen is obviously encouraged by her success at Avalon on Sunday and has ditched her fins. Well done.

I just read the newsletter regarding Julie getting an Australia Day Award and I have to say Massive Congratulations! I can’t think of a more deserving winner for all that you have done for us struggling ocean swimmers! I now live in Bondi so don’t get to make it back to Manly very often but loved the swims I did with you guys – such a welcoming group of swimmers – if on;ly we could start something like this over here! Well Done Julie and all of B & B crew!
