Calmer seas and calmer skies this morning. Here are the 6.30am swimmers heading out. It’s Lainey filling in for Alex who is sick today. I’m so loving the warmer water and it was a bit clearer so quite a few fish sightings!
The dress code was orange this morning, (for us 3 anyway!) Nick, me and Sophie.
My son Charlie brought his girlfriend Zoe down for an initiation swim/snorkel today. Here they are with Derek, Peter, Roz and Nicky.
Nat was down this morning with husband Vira. She’s just had her first round of chemo and is staying as positive, happy and inspiring as ever. She’s very open and honest about her cancer journey and is cutting her hair shorter and shorter so it won’t be such a shock if she does lose it. This amazing ‘mother of 5 sons’ really is such an incredible human being and it’s lovely seeing her come down for her Dr Salt.
Zoe and Charlie head out. Zoe tried to avoid wearing a pink cap but we got her in the end!
After the rain we’ve had it was a pleasant surprise to see it quite clear at the point. A Crimson Banded Wrasse showing his beautiful colours. (Yes, in the marine world the males are usually the most colourful fish!)
This Crimson Morwong showing his big lips!
Not so many Diamondfish in ‘Diamondfish Alley’ today.
A brightly coloured Goatfish hanging around by the shed. We often see purple and gold Goatfish near the point.
Gorgeous friendly Groper around at halfway.
Not a great photo but we see these fish a lot. It’s a Goatfish on the left and Maori Wrasse on the right.
Old Wives
Hulafish and Silver Sweep… Lovely to see the schools of smaller fish back which the experts tell us is the sign of a healthy aquatic reserve.
Lots of happy swimmers finishing their swim!
It was Amelia’s 17th birthday today but she was a bit shy to tell people at Shelly. Happy B’day Amelia!
Here is Murray aka ‘The Kid’ and his friends post swim at Bluewater Cafe. The 3 guys came 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the recent Newport swim. Well done guys!
Signing off
Lainey
I’m here with Sharnie and the turtle she caught about 2 weeks ago. Sharnie swam today and said he/she is doing well at Sealife and most of the barnacles have come off. He’s been eating well and looks a lot healthier. She also said he’s been doing some extra large poos and is still passing seagrass from his time at Cabbage Tree Bay. (No plastic yet). The turtle will be released back in the bay soon hopefully!
ALL NEWBIES:
Please handwrite your email address neatly and you will be rewarded with an email from Pacific Jules!!
As the Summer long distance swimming season approaches, management thought that it would be a good time to clarify what it takes to earn a badge. Three long distance swims are on offer:
· The 6 km swims are held every summer Saturday morning generally starting with the 7 am swim. The first 6 km swim will be on Saturday 2nd December.
· There is a 10 km swim once a month over summer also generally starting with the 7 am swim. Dates for these will be announced in the blog. The first will be on December 16th.
· If these swims are too long for you, you can try a Triple Manly to Shelly swim any day during Summer (distance 3.5 km) from 6.30 or 7 am.
You will earn a badge if you complete these swims and log them in iLog. The system will only record authorised 6K or 10K swims that are logged on the appropriate days. Badges will be presented at the Summer Badge Ceremony in March. If you are unsure of the routes and protocols for these swims, please ask at the desk before you swim. When swimming these longer distances, we request that, for safety reasons, you stay with the group. We also request that you do not swim in dangerous conditions. The quest for a little cloth badge is not worth putting your life at risk.
Enjoy your swimming.
