Well
there were a ridiculous 22 B&B who would not have missed the adrenaline
rush of a little swim with Oswald (Cyclone Oswald that is)
See
from all the bright and shiny smiles how committed each swimmer is to seizing
the most out of every day. .

At
T minus 4 minutes there were still just a handful of intrepid souls. Including Swedish
Sarah who braved the conitions! To pass the time Mr Bond checked the temp –
21 degrees. That was about as close as anyone came to approaching the foaming surf!

As the point was a little less that calm, we moved on to Half-Way.

After couple of attempts and being just a little bit sensible it was also considered a “no go” – but loads of fun getting wet.

But
there are always a couple who see an opportunity to leap between the waves.

Shelly
provided a relatively safe haven to venture in today. Although I love that Jane and John took time
out to recreate that very famous scene on From
Here to Eternity. Lancaster and Kerr
eat your hearts out.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a B&B Swim without a bevy of blog tarts.

There was some concern that Lesley had been taken by the seaweed monsters that covered the beach.

But no, she was off rescuing a small marine creature that had been washed up on the sand.

And as our founder taught us to do – we did wait for everyone to arrive safely at Shelly before heading back.

So while it may not have appeared to be the best day to leap into the bay, there is always the joy of the shared experience when you make the effort.

And TONIGHT!! The B&B Dinner at Bluewater.
All the fun of the swim without getting wet! Enjoy a fab two course meal for just $20 plus $5 beer and wine. You can BYO wine only and there is no corkage.
Opening this week at Glen Street Theatre is Managing Carmen by David
Williamson. This kicks off the season at Glen Street Theatre and is playing from 30 Jan – 9 Feb. The special offer for the B&B is $53 for Adult evening ticket plus a
free drink for all evening performances excluding opening night. (That’s a
saving of $10 off the full ticket price.)
Please use the codeword BOLD to redeem this offer online or
over then phone. If you would like to
hang out with the performers there is a Meet the Cast session on Tuesday 5 Feb.
Lovely Glenn Hazeldine is not only a talented performer, but he was (I
have to confess) the brains of the winning team in the 2011 B&B Trivia
Night. The reviews are great, and it is a good laugh.
So with all this weather it is a good time to note that it is so important to swim within your limits. Michael Christie’s tips on how to stay safe are an important feature of the blog and personally I have found them invaluable. These tips help beginners and advanced swimmers alike – Please read it here or read it again if you already have!
Here are the key points:
- Know your limits
- Know and understand your beach
- NEVER panic. Always keep CALM
- Time entry and exit to sets
- Go out on the rip
- Come in on the sandbank
- Swim a maintainable pace so you:
- Keep your breath
- Keep your energy
- Keep your courage

Fun swim for the Hard Core this morning! Welcome back Sarah, only a newbie for 2013 – Sarah swam for a couple fo months Jan to March or so last year and couldn’t resist coming back. BTW she’s looking for work – she’s a qualified florist and swim coach in Sweden, willing to try anything here -hopefully near Manly!

oooh Mary great debut! And so neat with a little line! I love it!! Thanks for coming out today even though you weren’t well and got wet and couldn’t swim! That’s blogging committment!!
That little marine creature was a LOBSTER I think! I “threw” it back in the surf though I hope I did the right thing? Jane??
ps. in background of Jane being rescued picture, yes Ian and I WERE laughing at Jane and appearing NOT to help but we HAD already tried unsuccessfully to help her but she was laughing so much should couldn’t stand up! What would we do without Jane for entertainment on these rough days!! 😀

Thankyou Iain and John for so courageously rescuing me from the boiling surf at Shelly Beach. We have so many heroes in our squad. What a fun swim!
And yes Lesley, I agree that is a sweet little baby lobster who will now live to feed another human.
And now for an “Aaaaaaaaaaah” moment: http://www.dump.com/dolphinbirth/

As half of the integrity police, doing my regular checks, I noticed that The Lips ticked for the swim this morning. However with so few people there you’d think I’d have seen him. I didn’t see him at all.
Can anyone confirm he was physically there? DWSS, Jack S, Swedish Sarah?

Great pics Mary capturing the rough conditions this morning, including the one at the sea wall at halfway

Wow that looked really great at Manly.
It was crook over here-
flat as a pool and the sun so bright it hurt your eyes reflecting off the brilliant white sand, through water so clear you needed sunnies!!
You’ve certainly got to be tough to keep going over here!!

Yes, I know it sounds crazy (especially looking at the pictures), but I actually missed swimming this morning! It was back to work today after 5 weeks off and let me tell you, it’s a rough adjustment! Work totally cramps my style! Hopefully I’ll see you all tomorrow!

I was there!!!
Fourth pic down. Heroic looking figure in white rashie. Standing in front of pole. Bit hard to see with all the spray.
Mary – great debut. But seriously. With only 22 of us out there today. How on earth did you not get a good picture with me in it!!!

Sounds like hard going over there, but some of us just thrive on the rough conditions.

Just got this from Mark at the OzMus re Mauricio’s great video. Congratulations Mauricio – you have joined an august bunch of distinguished B&B photographers
Hi Jane,
That’s lovely footage of a spotted wobbie. Thank you for sending the link.
I already have footage of the species on the website, so am not desperate to add it to the site. I would however be very happy to add the clip to the museum’s youtube channel and embed it on the factsheet if Mauricio is happy to chop out just the wobbegong part of the movie. If this is too much work or he doesn’t have time etc, etc, I’m not worried.
Cheers,Mark
Jools, can you pleez send me Mauricio’s email address so I can put him in touch with Mark?

Oh dear! How did you manage to avoid the camera? Actually I have to confess that you do appear in a couple – they were just a bit unexciting or fuzzy (sorry). However, I have ‘updated’ (hope that is permitted) with before and after the splash at Half Way. And guess what. . . the white rashie shines brightly 🙂

The Crustacean experts at Bluewater tonight (i.e. Nick, Ian and Pauline) said it was a Yabby, not a lobster. I’m going to get the World Crustacean Expert at the OzMus (a lovely young Japanese researcher called Hiro) to make a final diagnosis for us.
