Wednesday 4th: Flying High (1980)

04/11/201515

Thanks Lainey for giving me the blog today – to look back at movie Flying High (released 35 years ago).  It’s a sharply perceptive parody of the big-budget disaster films that dominated Hollywood during the 1970s.

Wednesday Conditions: Soft overnight drizzle; nil carparks even at 5.45 a.m; surfboat on the water at 5.48, ocean flat calm clear and utterly perfect!

David Zucker explained that “the trick was to cast actors like Robert Stack, Leslie Nielsen, Peter Graves, and Lloyd Bridges.  These were people who, up to that time, had never done comedy.  We thought they were much funnier than the comedians of that time were.”

Flying High‘s reputation has grown substantially.  In a 2007 UK survey, it was judged the second greatest comedy film of all time, after Life of Brian.

The pneumatic autopilot was memorable.  Elaine had to re-inflate it, after it went down on the pilot.

Ted Stryker reminisced about his failed mission, which led to his quitting life as a pilot.

Melbourne Cup – The Race That Stops Jeff Swimming

This is Nathan Perry‘s latest surfboat (Nil logos yet).  It took a couple of weeks to build.  He’s thinking of naming it after his mum …

BREAKING NEWS: Storchy swallowed a fly at 5.39 a.m, Roger forgot his swimmers.  Reg did too.  You read it here first.  Matt to Guy: “I’d never forget my swimmers.”

Ian passes wind, instantly knocking out entire boot camp

STATS

Swimmers:    60

Jimbles:          A couple

Newbies:         One

Temp:               20.2º

Fantastic blog Roger. Lots of time put into it. And I enjoyed being distracted by it and reading it at work when I should have been doing something else entirely! Love Airplane.
