Wednesday, 31 May 2017 – Winter is coming

31/05/201724

Filling in for lucky Lisa who is now on her way to warm and sunny Bali. Well timed Lisa! But you missed out on another beautiful swim, in perfectly flat water and abundant marine life. And it didn’t feel as cold as yesterday. According to the SMH, was last night was the coldest May night in 20 years.

Still dark when the early morning swimmers hit the water

Various means of staying warm at the Surf Club waiting for the 7am call:

many layers of clothing …

hot coffee …

a beanie

and the hot water bottle. But wait Richard, you are 1 day early, its not winter yet, shame on you

important reminder from John Bond

two charming and brave newbies

And then into the water (or more precisely walk to the point, as the low tide was quite extreme today)

Some happy faces at Shelly

and then, excitement at Shelly of a special kind: no birthday, no 500k or 1,000k announcement, but a dismally failed attempt from the self-proclaimed A-Team in prematurely announcing “let’s go” without prior arrangement or endorsement from management. Thanks God, nobody except the A-Team paid attention to them, and instead a booeing from all other swimmers set in which could still be heard at the Surf Club.

John Kelly managed to restore order and ensured a proper start back from Shelly, in compliance with the B&B etiquette.

My suggestion to the A-Team: Why don’t you consider swimming on your own with your small exclusive group, you can then set your own rules, and have your own A-Team swim caps. There are still time slots available to start from the Surf Club at 5.30 and at 8am.

Back in Manly: Sorry to tell you Lisa, but your spot on the wall is gone now. It’s been renamed to the “Men of the Wall”. Edwina tried to defend the spot, but she was decisively outnumbered

These blokes enjoyed their swim

Enjoy the rest of your day

Bernhard

B&B Monthly Dinner at Bluewater Cafe

June – Special Gin and Botanical Vodka Tasting Dinner

The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 13th June at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant, and will include an exclusive Gin and Botanical Vodka tasting for B&B members and their friends. One of our swimmers, Vanessa Wilton, will talk about her new venture, Manly Spirits Co., which has recently launched with an award-winning range of premium Australian spirits that are crafted to showcase the finest Australian produce, sustainably sourced native botanicals and foraged marine botanicals.

The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes the gin tasting plus shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential:  To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book HERE.

Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Nice work Bernhard. Thank you
Just superb swimming this morning, so calm and peaceful (except for the roar of the baying mob at Shelly… if only we could swim with pitchforks).
Better not come back from Bali and find boy germs all over that piece of real estate!

I really do not see what the fuss is about!!
Viewing from the surf club, it is not a wall!!
    It is a Gutter!!!!
    Great blog Bernhard!! Nailed it.
Shelly, I tried swimming with a pitch fork once. Don’t ask me why but it wasn’t that successful.

You poor lot, the oldest May night! Just basking at the rooftop pool in 28 degree air temp with a gentle breeze. The sea is rather nice at 27 too! Waiting for the other Bali Snorkelers to arrive!
Great blog Bernard. You still make it sound enticing at the swim and some great photo cropping catching our lovely swimmers. Particularly like the Derek and Peter shot and Gayle McNaughty and Sparkles!

Wow blistering criticism of the A-team… and on the day the Chairman of the A-team, Mr Bruce Baird is ‘swimmer of the day.’

Brilliant Bernhard, always like new suggestions. I missed the naughty business at Shelly, was busy snorkelling near the shed.

Wow!! Gone for just one day and all hell breaks loose!! Dissension in the ranks, storming and Breaching of the wall and a threatened take over. I think I know how Trump might feel. Bernhard your blog today was a masterpiece. It had humour, interesting content and encouraged a wide variety of responses. You can fill my blog time slot any time. By the way, Day 1 in Bali has been amazing!!!
