ok I admit, today seemed bleak, dreary, dark, wet, cold and unmotivating, but that was only until I arrived at B & B central, where the sense of anticipation of disrobing to jump into the calm waters grew rapidly for the 6.30’s. As the rain fell and the clouds overhead promised to hide any hint of a sunrise, the early swimmers laughed and joked their way down the ramp to the water, knowing they had made the right decision to get out of bed.
Holly, Julie and Mel looking forward to the swim. After the swim Mel wasn’t looking forward to walking home barefoot as someone, I’m sure inadvertently, took her warm, cosy, dry black boots. There were a pair of black Uggs left by the wall so they have been left in the lifeguards office. If you accidentally took Mel’s boots could you return them as soon as possible. Her feet will thank you
Each group of early swimmers seemed very excited about swimming in the rain.
Meanwhile, Shelly Beach has been given the very responsible task of recording the water temperature while John Bond is away. He was delighted to watch everyone’s faces as they realised it had dropped to 17.6
Ian, Alanna and Shelly
The 7 o’clockers gather
Candace, Pauline, Cheryl, Francis and Gayle
I love this group shot. Wetsuits obviously the preferred option for these guys.
Martin, Michele, Candace, Robyn, Georgina and Jane
Great mates enjoying a bit of banter no doubt
Bob with Paul and Angela.
Gorgeous father and daughter photo of Bones and Jodie. What a wonderful morning activity to share.
Julia and Damien
Jodie, Naomi and Megan
Sue, Jodie, Lainey, Naomi and Megan walking to the point.
Angela, Robyn, Candace, Jane and Georgina using a group cuddle to keep warm at the point.
Shenanigans at Shelly
Very few were brave enough to expose arms this morning. With just 9 degrees air temp it was warmer to stay under.
Beaming Bathing Beauties!
Kara, Gemma and Matt
Beautiful photo of a glowing Amelia, who is 33 weeks pregnant and loving her swimming.
Kara on her return to Manly. The darkness of the sky and sea were highlighted by the sun trying to push through
Gemma and I stopped to appreciate how spectacular the conditions were.
Cheryl and Francis finally returning after 2 hours in the water. Note the absence of wetsuits!! Im not sure how much feeling they had left in their hands and toes. Their tally for the day – “6 cuttlefish, 3 pjs, shovel nose ray, x2 fiddler rays, 3 bar porcupine fish, massive swimming numb ray, octopus … and lots of fish! So worth the effort … vis 15-20 m at the point …”.
Francis came up with an ingenious way to help Cheryl thaw out after the swim. 12 litres of hot water poured over her whilst standing in a bucket so her feet could also warm up!!
I warmed up with a lovely coffee with Di. Yes Johnnie, she is loving her winter swimming!
Just in case you don’t get the Manly Daily, some of our beautiful swimmers are featured in a fun article.
I just had to take this photo yesterday of Deon, Sam, Emma and Paddy who found a great way to warm up. They brought a trangia down and brewed a nice pot of tea. Deon was shivering so much he was struggling to pour straight.
This Sunday, 16th July, Emma and I will be organising a cake stall to raise funds to support two charities. Emma has taken on the amazing challenge of Dry July which asks participants to give up alcohol for the month of July and raise funds for cancer patients and their families and carers. Funds raised go towards cancer support organisations across Australia to help improve patient comfort, care and wellbeing.
This is her 7th year running doing dry July! What incredible commitment!
My son Daniel, a somewhat irregular B and B swimmer is running in his first half marathon to raise funds for Cure Cancer Australia. It is a cause very dear to me. In January 2014 my husband John and I were both battling the ravages of chemotherapy as we desperately fought against the cancers that had been found just 2 months apart. We both owe so much to all the researchers, medical and support professionals and of course to all our family and friends. During my treatment the one highlight for me was to be helped in to the water at Shelly beach by friends so I could float. With no energy or strength to do anything else, floating was pure joy. Little did I realise back then that I would become so addicted to our beautiful swim within a year!
We would really appreciate your support, whether you are able to help by baking something or if not by enjoying a sweet or savoury treat post swim.
I hope everyone continues to have a great day. Stay warm!
Lisa
Stats:

Australians for Women’s Health TRIVIA NIGHT
Note from Management: to clear up any confusion, the 2017 Quiz Night is not a B&B event. It is an event run outside of B&B by two B&B members, Roz Beaver and Elaine De Jager to support Dr. Rays charity. The normal B&B quiz night will be held next year in 2018.
Tickets are selling fast for the A4WHTrivia night being held at The Steyne on Tuesday 18th July, 6-9.30pm
The theme is “Naughty”cal so let your imagination run wild with some fancy dress and join in the fun. John Kelly has kindly volunteered his services as quiz master and is sure to have plenty of “trivial” questions to challenge us.
Tickets are $30 and the main meal is provided. Bookings can be made at
https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/a4wh-trivia-night-aka-not-the-bb-trivia-night-tickets-35531373294
Roz and Lainey are also asking for donations of prizes and silent auction items so if you have a business and could donate a service or have unwanted Christmas presents that could be “re gifted”, Elaine De Jager or Roz Beaver would be happy to hear from you.
The proceeds from the evening are being donated to Dr Ray’s charity, Australians 4 Women’s Health, who are building a hospital for women and babies in Charikot, Nepal.
Visit http://www.a4wh.org/ and check out the great work they are doing to improve the lives of these poor women and their families.
For dietary requests or other queries, contact Roz Beaver – rozb@artnsoulworks.net
Thank you in advance for your support of this very worthy cause!

Absolutely fantastic blog again Lisa, so happy, positive and inclusive. I didn’t realise your husband had cancer too. What an awful time that must have been. We are all so lucky you are addicted to the B&B now as your warmth cheers everyone up! I’ll definitely be there on Sunday with my ‘Nutty Seedy Cookies’ 😉
Thanks to so many of you for booking the Trivia Night. We are up to nearly 100 now and there are some great prizes and things for auction. Thank you to so many for donating things too. The renowned Dr Keith Hartman is now on the board of A4WH so a great endorsement!

Its a good cause, why is it important to you to use terms like “why is it getting shoved down the B&Bs throat daily”. This post of yours seems more at odds with B&B morals and ethics.
