Tuesday 2nd May – A big improvement, conditions and clarity

02/05/20230

After quite a week last week with big surf and strong rips, it was lovely to come down this morning and actually swim from Manly. The temperature was up on yesterday at 21.3c but numbers of people were way down so it was pretty quiet in the bay.

A gorgeous, sunny morning but air temperature was chill so it was time to bring out the winter woolies (uggs, beanie, bathmat). Although it looks pretty calm the rip was still going and the dangerous current sign went up shortly after we got back. Viz today was superb. We saw 2 juvenile  duskies (or were they grey nurses, not 100% sure which) at the point and a very small dusky just out from Shelley. Lots of fish around, 1 orange jelly hit my foot, those blue light lice sized things were about (not sure what they are but look quite pretty). We saw a few rays out in the middle that looked small as they were so deep. Nice to be able to see the bottom all the way across.

Not sure what has happened to the surf club clock but it is throwing people, not knowing what time it is. Even worse than when it was there but wrong!

Penny, Peter, Derek, Ted, Greg and dogs enjoying the sunshine that this time of year brings.

Milling around pre or post swim, depending on your timing.

Dan, Chris and Stu raving about the great viz and great swim.

Georgina, Lisa and Melise having a post swim chat and coffee.

It’s forecast to be sunny all week, so let’s hope the conditions stay good too.

Tuesday Night Talk.

This month’s talk, SWIMMING WITH WHALES

Husband and wife team Alice and David Edgar are Manly locals with a love of marine mammals and whales in particular. Ten years ago they first started swimming with humpback whales in the warm waters of Tonga where David learned underwater photography with Alice honing her skills as an underwater freediving model. Their adventures have brought them all over the world and has seen their adventures published in National Geographic, CNN and international newspapers around the world. They now own a local business focussed on swimming with whales.

Come along to hear about their experiences and learn about:

  • How you can swim/snorkel with humpback whales (no SCUBA required)
  • Where is the best place in Tonga for close interactions with these amazing creatures
  • What a typical day on the water looks like
  • How you can have incredible encounters with whales in a safe and respectful way

DATE: Tuesday May 9 at 6:30 PM

VENUE: Upstairs at Manly Surf Club. Licenced bar will be open.

FOOD: Bring a plate. If you can, coordinate with some others so we don’t end up with 35 cheese plates.

COST: $10 per head. Donating to Dolphin Research Institute.

Numbers are limited so book early on-line at https://www.boldandbeautifulmanly.com.au/bb-monthly-talk.html

Have a great, sunshiny day.

Amanda
