Thursday 7 September: Oceans of love in the air at Manly today

07/09/201710

I have a confession, I need to come out. I know many of you have suspected this for some time. My name is Peter and I am a thalassophile. OK there you have it, I’m a lover of the ocean. Funny thing is, now that I’m out, I think many of you may be thalassophiles too. If you are in doubt here is your ready reckoner…do any of these describe you?

  1. You make friends with the people you meet at the swim – insanity likes company
  2. You believe the ocean temperature that John Bond makes up each morning
  3. You come down to the swim early and talk about water temperature
  4. You go on holiday’s to places by the sea like Bali
  5. You like having sand in your shoes
  6. You like welcoming newbies because they are as mad as you
  7. You like looking at pictures of the ocean and fish
  8. You think sharks are misunderstood
  9. You have coffee after the swim and talk about the ocean
  10. You wish you could spend more time in the ocean

If you tick more than one meet outside Manly Surf Club at 7 am,or usually earlier, to talk about the ocean then jump in. The only cure is more ocean. Here are typical thalassophiles that enjoyed their ocean fix this morning:

Thalassophiles like to celebrate birthdays by not just being in the ocean but having ocean splashed on them. Just like the beautiful Fabienne who celebrated her birthday today…

With oceans of love from your fellow thalassophile,

Pete Anthony

Stats:

Water temp: 17.3 (felt like 16.89)

Swimmers: 128

Newbies: 0.25 (she took a brochure and is coming back next week to swim)

Great Music In Manly this Saturday Night 9th September

Nick Howard, one of our swimmers, is playing with his band at the Boatshed Manly this Saturday night 9th September. Make sure you come and bring your friends to support Nick.

Outstanding guest speaker at Monthly Dinner 12th September 2017

The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 12th September at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. The guest speaker on the night will be Dr Tanya Evans, whose talk is entitled “20 places you should visit even though you may never have heard about them and probably can’t pronounce them”

Dr Tanya Evans is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Modern History at Macquarie University, President of the History Council of NSW and editor and author of Swimming with the Spit. Tanya’s talk will demonstrate that we B&Bs are not the first people to amble down to the beach and enjoy our invigorating morning swims. Sydney has a fascinating history of dynamic community swimming organisations. Learn all about this fascinating subject on the night.

The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. I scored 9.5 out of 10. I could only claim half marks for #9 as I indulge in the post-swim banter, but don’t drink coffee.
I certainly trust John’s water temps much more so than the ABC news. Last night’s weather report reckoned 22C for Sydney waters. Can only think they routinely poke their thermometer up some poor PJ’s butt.

Love…ly blog today Peter! Proud to be a thalassophile. Nick would love it if B & Bers could support him playing at The Boatshed on Saturday at 9pm and I’ve heard he’s really good! Some of you are a bit snooty about The Boatshed but with the right music and people it’s great!

I scored 10 out of 10! Does that make me a gold member of the thalassophile club? Great blog Peter, gorgeous photos!
