Thursday 3rd August : Why an optimistic outlook makes a better swim and a happier life

03/08/20178

There are many things that make our group special, one of them is our optimistic outlook. Of course real optimism is the way we decide to answer the questions we ask ourselves. Like ‘how long will this beautiful winter last?’ Optimists like us find all the reasons we can to make these good times last and to affect our whole day positively. Then when we think about bad events like say bluebottles we think of them as being isolated to a particular part of the ocean and not lasting long. The pessimists find opposite answers -good times are short lived while bad times last forever and affect everything. Which way you think is a choice, and Positive Psychology tells us the optimists are happier, healthier, wealthier, and more resilient. Plus optimists swim faster than pessimists because they use bad events as a spur to swim harder. Sounds like a useful way to think. We had plenty of swimmers today with an optimistic outlook, here’s just a few of the 119 who turned up with their optimistic outlook…

I always look forward to seeing you guys.

B&B MONTHLY DINNER – GUEST SPEAKER

The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 8th August at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. The guest speaker on the night will be travel agent Brett Goulston, whose talk is entitled “20 places you should visit even though you may never have heard about them and probably can’t pronounce them”

Brett is co-owner of Blue Dot Travel (with two of our B&B swimmers, Brod Brennan & Joanne Coughlan). All three are travel tragics who have travelled to most of the corners of the globe and are passionate travellers, swimmers and walkers.

Blue Dot Travel is a boutique travel business which has generously signed on as a B&B sponsor. The business focuses on mature/young at heart travellers who are looking for unique experiences (think Madagascar, Kamchatka, Nagaland, Ethiopia, Caucuses, Iceland, etc). To celebrate the occasion they will be giving away 5 lucky door prizes on the night as well as offering Bold & Beautiful members a $250 discount off any trip they book in the next 60 days.

The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential:  To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book HERE.

B&B Badge info:
The winter swimming season runs from 1 June to 31 August, and to qualify for your winter badge, you must:

  • swim at least 20 times during this period
  • swim in at least 7 different weeks
  • log your swims

To qualify for the WWW badge (winter without wetsuit) you must complete all of the above without wearing a wetsuit or any other form of bodily thermal enhancement (don’t forget to check the “without wetsuit” button on the log in screen). Why not give it a try?

Special White Water offer for us…

There were a few of us gazing out around 8:40 too, when a dolphin popped up between the point and the beach break.

Excellent blog Peter. Indeed hang out with the optimists and avoid pessimists as they have a problem for every solution.
