Being raised old school male has its pros and cons. You get all the strength of the masculine energy but you often feel trapped in it too because its not cool be be male and vulnerable. You need to be tough and macho and never display emotion. Superman never cried. But a few years living that way and you find that if you cant express love you’ll never get it in return. And you miss out big time. That’s why I was relieved to come across the work on vulnerability by Brene Brown: here’s a link to her Ted talk. Brene Brown Ted Talk. She found in her research of people who had endured great hardships that they had the courage to be vulnerable and be themselves. They could then connect with people and find the strength to move through the hard times. She defined vulnerability as ‘the courage to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart.’ The whole hearted warrior living your own heroes journey. I like that thought and I feel many of you reading this feel that way too. Because without feeling we are nothing. Feelings connect us and courage moves us forward to better places, together. That connectedness and courage is at the warm heart of our swim, on even the coldest mornings. Here are a few of the whole hearted from this morning’s swim:
Stay vulnerable, stay courageous.
