Like most swimmers I love the dawn in all its majesty and the promise it brings every day to refresh and enrich our lives. And that’s everyday magic. So what’s so special about Easter for us?
Well Easter the word is a derivation of the name for the pagan goddess Eostre who was worshiped at the beginning of Spring in the northern hemisphere. She is a symbol of fertility represented by eggs and rabbits. And Eostre evolved to Easter and hence our bunnies and eggs.
And yet she is also the Goddess associated with dawn, of light and warmth. As the monk Bede wrote of her:
Eostre, the fiery dawn,
the waxing sun,
the warmth of spring:
Open the gates and bring to me
the growth of joy,
the light of life,
the glow of beauty.
So each time you see an Easter Bunny or eat an egg think about Eostre, and her reminding us of our darkness bursting into light. And how her magic happens every day.
There were lots of dawn lovers swimming in the bumpy warm ocean today.
I’ll see you after the dawn…
