The 5am’ers

07/04/20260

There’s a quiet kind of magic that happens down at the beach before most of the world wakes up.

By 5:30am, the early risers are already here, the ones I like to call the “5 a.m.ers.” The people who choose to start their day with intention. You see them scattered along the sand, some walking, some sitting, all facing the horizon.

There’s something almost unspoken between them. No rush, no noise, just that shared ritual of watching the day begin.
I was thinking about this a couple of weeks ago when I was walking along the beach with Lisha. We noticed how people gather here for the sunrise, day after day. It’s like a ritual. They sit and stare out toward the horizon, quietly waiting… but for what exactly? Maybe it’s not about the sunrise itself, but about that moment of stillness before everything else begins.

This morning, I’m back into my own rhythm, walking the Manly to Queenscliff stretch I haven’t done in a while. It feels good to be back. I’ve just returned from a trip down the south coast, exploring ocean pools, chasing sunrises, riding my mountain bike. It was one of those trips that fills you up completely. And yet, walking here now, I can’t help but think… how lucky am I to come home to this?

The waves are small today, just gentle lines rolling in and softly spilling over themselves. Nothing dramatic, just calm and steady. I’ve got a coffee in hand, the air is fresh, and everything feels unhurried. You can already tell—it’s going to be a beautiful day.

At one point, I glance up and notice the light catching the edge of a cloud, creating that perfect silver lining you so often hear about, but rarely actually see. And there it is, clear as anything. One of those simple, fleeting moments that makes you stop and take it in.

And of course… I couldn’t resist a swim.
The water was absolutely gorgeous. That first step in…fresh, a little brisk, but then your body adjusts, and suddenly it feels just right. The temperature, the clarity, the way it wakes you up completely. There’s nothing quite like it. Floating there, looking back at the shoreline, it just felt… easy. Natural. Like exactly where I was meant to be.

Mornings like this aren’t about doing more. They’re about noticing more. Slowing down enough to feel it, to see it, to be part of it.
And maybe that’s what the 5 a.m.ers understand.

It’s not just about watching the sunrise.
It’s about how you begin.
