We had Nor’ East swell today, and the boardriders graciously gave us space to swim out. The sets were intermittent with longish lulls but the lifeguards issued their safety warnings regardless – only swim out from the beach if you are a strong and confident swimmer. This applies every day – be aware of your skill level and there is no shame in taking the safer option. Remember, there is only one rule at the B&B and the rule is Have Fun.
This is Dennis – he was taking photos this morning of Vlad (whose surname I can’t remember) who is preparing to swim the Cook Strait which separates the North and South Islands of New Zealand. This is a Big Deal, as the crossing can be quite treacherous. Vlad was already in the water when most of us were getting ready to swim (hint – Dennis is the one who isn’t wearing budgy smugglers)
Lots of swimmers today, including newbies. Last time I checked 156 people had logged their swim. Water temp in the low twenties is still very tolerable
SUP rider in amongst it
Some very happy and relaxed looking WoWs at the point
Shelley and her boy Evan
Awesome vlogger Jacqui
And that’s her again.
The swell stirred up the sand today and this did not improve visibility at all. Still no sighting of a cuttlefish, which disappoints me greatly.
The duskies have been eating well since arriving at Cabbage Tree Bay and have grown.
Spotted this puffer fish at the Point
Knowing our fine lifeguards are out there looking after us is very motivating. You’re welcome
The mood back on shore was relaxed as befits a long weekend.
Regular dog of the day Colby demonstrating a very fine Downward Dog (adhomukha svanasana for the purists)
Finally left the beach feeling grateful for the privilege of starting the day in such a marvellous fashion
What am I listening to? I overheard this tune that my son was playing while he was cooking dinner the other day and while it’s not what I would normally listen to I thought it was apt for a long weekend.
Enjoy

Love the song at the end and another great, interesting, informative blog Anne. Was that Vlad in the budgies or was he out swimming? Great shot of the swell in first photo and downward facing dog! Happy Easter everyone

Hi Lainey,
Thanks for the kind words. Vlad was already in the water doing some insane amount of kilometres. Cook Strait, what a challenge!

Good song. Great blog. Yes Dennis is the photographer of Andre Wiersig the distance swimmer who is doing Cook strait. And has done some other big swims. Andre was apparently out swimming with Pier and others. Bit exciting
