Just over 2 weeks until Xmas so I really should think about braving the hordes and start some Xmas shopping.
This year I got to thinking, what can I give someone that will really make a difference to their life?
That is when I had my AH-AH moment.
The perfect gift – a PINK CAP.
Those little pink caps are truly full of magic for what they provide on a daily basis.
According to a recently published survey that explores the use of shadow pricing (the assignment of a dollar value to an abstract commodity) to estimate the monetary values of satisfaction with life, they came up with this.
1. Cameraderie – regular social contact and activity with family and friends can be worth as much as an additional $131,132 per year in terms of life satisfaction.
2.Communing with nature – an additional $73,487.00 per year
3. Health – worth $363,170 per year. Improvement in health has one of the largest effects on life satisfaction.
4. Gratefulness – extends way beyond the morning swim – $48,929.00 per year
5. Achievement – when you make a decision on a goal (to complete a Manly to Shelly return or maybe a 6k swim), you feel so much better than when good stuff just happens by chance – $38,746.00 per year.
Yesterday, Roger won his age group in the 4.5km 5 Beach Challenge swim from Coogee to North Bondi. A sensational result in a very hotly contested group.
So on Xmas morning when they unwrap their present and I tell them that this little pink cap is worth $655,464.00 they may look at me with total disbelief. At least I didn’t re-gift them those tacky crystal wine glasses they gave me last year.
However, every morning, we all know that when we come back to shore and reflect upon the swim, that little pink cap is absolutely PRICELESS.
Don’t forget, today is the one-day “Just Add Water” art exhibition in aid of Australians for Women’s Health.
It will be featuring the art of fellow swimmers Roz, Lainey and Georgina plus by popular request, the Sandy Bottom Band will be playing as well. A great opportunity to pick up some wonderful art, listen to one of the hottest new bands on the Northern Beaches and a chance to socialise with fellow swimmers.
See you there.

Summer badges;
As the Summer long distance swimming season approaches, management thought that it would be a good time to clarify what it takes to earn a badge. Three long distance swims are on offer:
· The 6 km swims are held every summer Saturday morning generally starting with the 7 am swim. The first 6 km swim was yesterday with about 20 completing the swim.
· There is a 10 km swim once a month over summer also generally starting with the 7 am swim. Dates for these will be announced in the blog. The first will be on December 16th.
· If these swims are too long for you, you can try a Triple Manly to Shelly swim any day during Summer (distance 3.5 km) from 6.30 or 7 am.
You will earn a badge if you complete these swims and log them in iLog. The system will only record authorised 6K or 10K swims that are logged on the appropriate days. Badges will be presented at the Summer Badge Ceremony in March. If you are unsure of the routes and protocols for these swims, please ask at the desk before you swim. When swimming these longer distances, we request that, for safety reasons, you stay with the group. We also request that you do not swim in dangerous conditions. The quest for a little cloth badge is not worth putting your life at risk.
Enjoy your swimming.
B & B Fundraising Christmas Party
Please book early for the B & B Christmas Party, which will be held on Tuesday 12th December at 6.30 pm in the Moonshine Bar (2nd Floor) at the Steyne Hotel. All swimmers and partners/friends are welcome (no under 18s unfortunately). The theme this year is “Retro Christmas”. So come dressed in your finest Christmas paraphernalia. Lots of fun and dancing are guaranteed, with music again this year by the band, “Gluteus Maximus”, who play two types of music, Rock and Roll! The cost is $15 per head, with all proceeds going to the running costs of the B&B. Book HERE now! Don’t miss out on this fun event, numbers are limited.
Donations wanted
As usual at the Xmas Party, we will be raising money for the Royal Far West as well as for B&B. This year RFW have some amazing prizes which will be auctioned on the night, including fantastic accommodation packages. We would also be grateful to have additional prizes to be auctioned, so if you have something special that you are happy to donate for the auction, please contact Ian (ugoboyo@gmail.com).

Great blog Michael. Love seeing all the swim buddies I didn’t catch up with today – what a HUGE turnout this morning.
I reckon after your suggestion of a Pink Cap for Chrissy, management might need to prepare for an upturn in demand.

Fantastic blog Michael. With all the life enhancing benefits of a B & B swim the best thing you can do is introduce someone to the swim. Thank you everyone who came to the art show. It was a great success! Looking forward to the B & B Christmas party now!

Thunderbird, you’ve made me homesick, lucky I have my pink cap with me. But does this mean I have to declare it as I return through customs as we are only allowed a $10,000 limit? Love all your photos and your theme. I’m missing you all x
