Phew. The election is over. What is the outcome? Can’t announce it in this blog.
I am probably not the only one to be glad. Well done to the BB people manning all the polling booths. Jason and Dr Simon
A lot of swimmers at BB are always thinking of goal setting – Did you know that a former Prime Minister gets a Life Gold Pass including things like car, office, travel benefits. If that appeals to you, start your training for future elections today. With a swim!
But while the election scare campaigns are over, the jimble scare campaigns are not. They were out there again.
the 630 swimmers setting off
Trevor noted that it is not as warm here are Whitehaven but he is still keen to swim
what is this “stuff”that everyone is after?
Rob and Justus. Looking great
Wendy and I are celebrating our 4th anniversary with BB!
I saw this tyre last year and today i finally saw it again while I had my camera. See Anne, I was not hallucinating!
After John Kelly’s Let’s Go, the swimmers descend
I saw the cuttle fish myself!

Fun fact: swimmers did not use goggles in international swimming events until 1972. See https://loneswimmer.com/2013/07/01/the-history-of-swimming-goggles/:
1969: Godfrey Goggles are manufactured in the UK by Thomas Godfrey. He tried a couple of types of plastic before settling on one that hadn’t previously been used for sports but we now know well; polycarbonate. Thin, light and highly durable and shatter resistant. Scotland’s David Wilkie becomes the first every competitive swimmer to wear both a cap and goggle combination at the 1972 Commonwealth Games, taking silver in the 200m breaststroke. Wilkie later went on to become the only person ever to hold only person to have held British, American, Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic at the same time. Subsequently Godfrey Goggles are allegedly copied and pirated by many goggle companies.
Since 1972: Goggles become standard swimmer equipment. It’s strange to realise that so recently they were not used by swimmers. Anti-fog, UV protection and streamlining are all incremental developments. Malmsten Swedish Goggles are released in the mid-seventies, allegedly a rip-off of the Godfrey Goggles. Swim training sessions get longer, flip-turns faster. Goggles allow elite swimmers to swim more than 4000 metres. The Men’s 1500 time drops by two minutes (13%) over three consecutive Olympics.
I do try to get the main stories relating to swimmers. Is Ian moonlighting as a model?
Staying safe – a timely reminder!
Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits. Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf. To read, or even download, click here.
WWW badge. We are up to week 5. Get down to the beach
Please be aware that to obtain the coveted WWW badge, the only part of the body that is allowed to be covered by wet suit material. Are the feet (booties allowed). Apart from the feet, the body should be covered in non-wet suit material.
Also, a reminder that the philosophy of the B&B group is that we are a group activity and that swims are only to be logged for swims made between the hours of 6am and the final 7am swim (or double or triple or other sanctioned swims).
Swims are not to be logged outside of these times for social and safety reasons. Management.

So funny, Elizabeth! I exclaimed at the tire explaining to the husband how long ago you had seen it — and then I read your comment! Sadly I missed the tire. Happily I missed any jimble stings and also happily I spotted three cuttlefish, one eagle ray and multiple blue gropers.
Happy Anniversary, Eluzabeth and Wendy. Two swimmers whose persistence and determination have led them to achieve things they never thought possible. Both inspiring. Congratulations!

Thx for the wonderful blogs, Elizabeth!
Yes, no goggles when some of us were young-er…. so some of us learnt to swim with our heads out of the water (especially in the heavily chlorinated pools!) or to avoid swimming altogether!
