13/03/2013 – Having fun with Bold and Beautiful!!

13/03/201327

Another stunning start to the day!!!

Although…Jenny was not happy with Robster the Blogster for putting up a bad photo (I know how she feels!)…so she decided punishment was in order and LSA just joined in for the fun of it – but Robster doesn’t look at all bothered!?!

…and so back to the swim…super conditions!

Elaine being pestered AGAIN by Andrew D for another photo with her…

Sigh…does it get any better??

At Shelly….

Saw stacks of Groupers today….Lovely blue one here..

Green one…

The more dangerous White Grouper….

And the most dangerous kind of all…The Brown Grouper…

 😀

On doing some Grouper research I came across a photo of one that looked very similar to one of our swimmers?!

Ted found some plastic brocolli in the water…

and a lost single flipper – size 5 – 6 – does it belong to anyone?

Elaine giving Cara some ‘grouping’ tips..

I had to put this in – Jane S’s lovely manicure! You can tell you’ve never squashed your feet into stiletto’s Jane!!

I found this article on sea lice!

Sea lice: An itchy problem

By OceanFit

Have you ever been swimming in the ocean and felt like you’ve got an itchy bite? or come out in a rash?

The chances are it’s the result of what’s commonly referred to as ‘sea lice’.

In fact, it’s not ‘sea lice’ in the way fishermen might think of it – this sea lice is a marine parasite that affect fish and actually have nothing to do with the itchy rash you’ve experienced.

Example of sea lice rash, in this case predominately in area under bikini strap where sea lice have been trapped

The ‘sea lice’ that causes the ‘itchy bites’ are actually tiny little jellyfish or stinger larvae that have the same stinging cells (nematocysts) as an adult jellyfish/stingers, but because they’re only small they only affect a small area.

They tend to travel in large groups or ‘blooms’ and will be prevalent in warm summer waters – some ocean swimmers suggest you’ll encounter them when there’s lots of seaweed floating around.

They’re microscopic and transparent in water so you’ve got no chance of seeing them, the first you’ll know about it is when you start to itch.

You’ll get the worst of it where the larvae get trapped under your togs or rashie, or even your armpit where they feel trapped causing the stinging cells to fire.

The worst thing you can do is itch them, you’re best to just flush your skin in fresh water when you get out – preferably with your swimsuit removed. When drying yourself off use a patting motion rather than rubbing the affected area.

For the majority of people the itch will be the worst part, and it could be delayed and last for a few days to a week after.

Give your swimsuit a good wash before you wear it again just to make sure all the cells have been washed out.

What a great blog – lots of things to comment on. Lesweeeee, I did wear stilettos when in my prime, but my feet have had rather a long time to grow back to normal. Very jealous of E-Lane, BUT I scored a lovely cuddle with Storchy.
Groper pics are fab – what about that green one! Same colour as Ted’s broccoli! I think it has to be a Western Blue Groper, amazing to see it so far away from usual habitat. I’ll check that one with Mark and Amanda at the OzMus. That’s an amazing likeness between Groper and swimmer.

Oh well, a few groupie gropers out there – groupers for short!
Lovely swim back with Ted while his wife was “grouping” – his souvenir hunting helped him slow down to my pace:)
Good likeness between that blue grouper and one of our swimmers:-))

    Looks like a lovely swim.
Little Sarah, I picked up the ‘you know whats’ from the ‘you know where’ today. Are you swimming tomorrow so I can hand them over?

    13/03/2013 at 12:17 pm

Oh, great, Little Tiger – so look forward to seeing the ‘you know whats’ tomorrow. We can hide round the corner for the ‘handover’, away from cameras, bloggers and blogtarts:-)

Can I suggest a little decorum if you employ the suggested cure for sea lice bites. If you must “flush your skin in fresh water when you get out – preferably with your swimsuit removed” can you please do it in the change rooms. If you must do it under the communal shower, can you please tell me first so that I can avert my eyes.

By the way. The time for Murrays tonight is after 6-30 pm.

I think “grouper” is American and “groper” is Australian terminology.

Slow Ian, JK or Leswee could you please save a 6 k badge for me for when I return.
Will settle for a low key badge ceremony or I’ll see if I can organize a video link for my acceptance on the official day.
Will have to pay you when I’m back or else get the money from LSA and I will pay her some ridiculous amount of interest.
I don’t know why my PC isn’t changing, thought I had an agreement with JS and DWSS.

What a morning, what a swim!
And Leswee captured all the important moments. Of which there were plenty.
Worrying to see White Gropers back in our waters. Now before anyone panics, let’s all remember that physical encounters like the one captured this morning are extremely rare. Statistically, you’re more likely to be run over by a car on your way to the beach than to be groped by one of those beasts.
    Elaine was just very unlucky.

Nurse J, I thought access to the B&B website was blocked in most of the Middle East?

  • Little Sarah Abbott aka Hong Kong Triad Queen

    13/03/2013 at 3:03 pm

Yes, I can attest to having seen a white groper or two on most my recent swims and, touch my pink cap, have never been groped. Elaine must be particularly tasty:-)

Nurse J, I’ll settle your debt with plenty of interest:-)
What on earth made you think that Storchy and Shauny would be of any help on the PC? Only accredited Triad members, remember.
You’ll note that, due to all your good custom through February, we’ve opened up B&B access in the Middle East for the duration of your stay. The only difficult part was providing a guarantee of nipless blogs!

    Hi Nurse J
Our agreement has been honoured but only when no-ones watching!
    Hope you’re having fun.
    Look forward to your return.

    Pretty Lesley
What are all those bubbles rising from your butt in your sign-off image?
I’m shocked, I thought you were much better raised than that!

Hmmm… funny blog Leswee and even funnier photos of parts of me on the net! I’m going to get the sack for reading it whilst on playground duty (and swearing!)

  • Little Sarah Abbott aka Hong Kong Triad Queen

    13/03/2013 at 4:29 pm

…and, Slow Ian, we’ll have a secret ceremony of your ‘you know whats’ from ‘you know where’ which I’ll present to LT in exchange for her ‘you know whats’…. all before our swim, what fun!!

Naughty girl! This is what Amanda from the OzMus says:
“From what the books tell us the Western only gets to SA. The diagnostic character is scale count above the lateral line – so easiest to ID dead 😉 Pretty sure it’s a female Blue”.
Now tell us – did the Internet say it was a Western Blue groper?

    Great blog Leswee. Edgy. Hahaha
    Edgy Leswee.

OK will bring cake and money.
If I bring enough money could I purchase a 10 K even though I only swam the 6?
Censorship is an issue, I am getting the gist that you are all still swimming, but the only photos that make it through are the fish and the blue and green gropers….definitely not the white gropers. Janes feet caused a near riot.
Thanks John S, I knew you wouldn’t let me down. It is almost impossible to get a sneaky tick in…….they have eyes everywhere.
Sarah I showed my B&B card at the bank and they said nothing would be a problem. Thanks for setting that up

Don’t worry Leswee – there is a some confusion between the Oz and Brit traditions around the names, but Groupers are fishes of a separate family (Serranidae) from the E. and W. Blue Gropers, which are Wrasses. The common names of different species vary from place to place and they are trying to standardise them, e.g. our beloved Manly Point Estuary Catfish is now officially a Cobbler (do cobblers, whatever they are, have whiskers?)
