Snapping Seals, Bloody Ankles, and Bagpipes at Breakfast – all in a days swim

August 21, 20189

Well the morning started quietly with nary a zephyr and the 4 metre swell was somewhere but not in our corner.

Classic conditions just a wee bit chilly in the 15 degree zone but it was only a minor distraction really. Around 6:30am John Bond showed me a small black seal swimming just off the point. The 6:30 crew dribbled in and no one reported seeing anything.

After the last seal sighting and subsequent demise, John was on the lookout for any other pointy things.

As the day progressed the sighting were mostly forgotten.

The girls prepping for the dip.

Jim with mini Jim, the only one with a noble cause and excuse for not swimming.

Min Jim right, all the way to the smile.

Only the keen and according to the attendance log 62 brave souls entered the water.

Sheet of glass conditions.

Given the risks, I thought it best to keep the feet up but made for slow going.

A nice ray on the way back.

And a swag of racing sea mullet staying in close out of the way of sharp things.

And as we are coming back in…..

Apparently, the resident seal we had seen earlier decided to create a diversion and nipped a passing swimmer. He didnt hold on for long but certainly caused a stir.

Keep an eye out for this guy moving at high speed.

No hospitalisation necessary but maybe a Rabies shot.

Terry swam around looking but couldnt find him.

And then amidst the all the talk of Bravehearts out came the Bagpipes to mark the occasion.

All in all we survived to swim another day.

Have a great week people.

Cheers

Brian

Turns out the seal did take a bite (per the picture above) and the swimmer did head up to Manly Hospital just to make sure all was ok (it was).
