Smoke on the Water. Fire in the Sky

We all came out to Pittwater, on the Lake Manly shoreline. To make records with a mobile, we didn’t have much time. Carter talks of 1.15 glory, fast and furious in the flat. Institutions are burning to the ground.

Smoke haze extended the morning light show. Green lights, red morning. You stumble out of a hole in the ground. John the chalky scratches up another 20+ day. Extending a flat season of warm, calm conditions. Word is out. The time to hesitate is through. The characters filter down to the shore, low tide, a school of luderick on the surface of the point, some skittish kingys shooting around. No signs of the copulating cuttlefish, just a horny viking in a yellow cap. Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets, looking for soul food and a place to eat. The season is changing but slowly. Glorious long swim.

Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’:

What not everybody knows is the real episode behind it. It happened in Montreux (Switzerland) in 1971 when, around the end of a concert by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, a spectator fired a rocket that ignited the whole casino (it had to shut down and reopened only in 1975). The title Smoke on the Water, credited to bassist Roger Glover, refers to the smoke spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino, while the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel.
