RIP Michael Christie

18/02/20261

Rest in Peace but also Revelled in the Indian and Pacific Oceans

Michael Christie was one of the earliest Bold and Beautiful swimmers. Before we had our online swim log, we ticked a paper log on a clipboard. Michael diligently and daily recorded all of our ticks into a spreadsheet. And, of course, he swam just about every day initiating doubles and triples. He continued his swimming in Western Australia after he and his partner, Julie Isbill, the founder of the Bold & Beautiful, relocated there in 2013. He cared deeply about water safety and cheerfully encouraged swimmers to do their best and perhaps swim a second lap of Cabbage Tree Bay.

Back in 2010 not long after I started swimming Michael made me, OK, encouragingly invited me to swim a ‘double’. I wasn’t sure I could make it but I did!! There was no looking back. Michael, John Bond and I did many doubles after that and now I’ve recorded more than 1,000 doubles.

In those early times we had a printed list with our names on it and ticked if we swam. Michael took those lists home every day and recorded our swims. He added newcomers to the list so their names were there on the next day. He wrote the first water safety advice posted on our early blogs. He was encouraging, enthusiastic and supportive. A great man to have known. Condolences, Julie.
