A bit dull and dreary at 6.30am this morning… Air temp had gone down, water temp down to 17.0 and water murky. Somebody described it as like swimming in a river! I was wondering how I was going to get inspiration for my blog when I entered the ladies toilets and came across… these cute little bums lined up! Thanks ladies! They assured me they didn’t mind being on the blog but…’ should have worn my lacies’ as one lovely lady blurted out!
These are some of the small group of 6.30 swimmers. That low lying cloud did disappear though and…
The sun came out for the 7am swimmers!
Sarah comes out from her early swim and gets together with Ian, Deb and Wendy for a photo. Deb still comes all the way from Galston to swim with us. Did anyone come further than that today? Remember we love to get comments at the end of the blog so please comment away – about anything!
How do you stop an ultra swimmer from drowning? (Take your hand off her head!) Inger is training up for a 9 km swim in Lake Burley Griffin in a few weeks. What a ledge!
Another legend is humble, unassuming but inspiring Justus Potgieter. His book ‘Life n’ Lyrics – A collection of Senior Moments’ is out now on Amazon. That is Derek and Panda on the front cover too. Justus is very modest and doesn’t want to sell any books directly but please buy one online. I’m getting mine today. Justus has had an interesting life of which I’ve only heard snippets. I do remember he was responsible for the school (where he was the Principal in South Africa) taking on the first black rugby player. Respect Justus!
I asked this lot their names, (except for Louise who photo-bombed) I said it sounds like they have their own kids TV show (Tim, Tom, Rosie and Stew)!!
John Bond is knocking up more kms after reaching 5000 on Friday and getting the longest celebratory tunnel in B&B history! He isn’t on Facebook but has seen your lovely, congratulatory comments and is ‘well chuffed’! Leisa next to him is celebrating her birthday tomorrow and swimming so get ready to give her a big splash at Shelley!
Jesse who I usually call Alex, is topless today!
Jeff with a J can rival Rainer with his great expressions, although not so scary. Michael is looking younger every day. I wonder why
Klaudia and Maddie bring friends along for their first swim. Not the most enticing day for a first swim but I’m sure they’ll be back!
Ingrid and Katrina
Sterling and Dave
Champ and Larry
Ann C’s back…
When Peter Lay gets to Shelly early he picks up rubbish. Good on ya Pete! Talking of caring for our environment…there’s a climate change initiative happening on Friday at 12.30pm called “Heads in the Sand”. A few of us are coming along. Please join us.
Sue is probably in the middle of her usual 5-6 km swim here!
We find out at the last minute that it’s Jo’s birthday. Don’t be shy about mentioning it’s your bday to Ian or John before the swim. We love singing to you and splashing you!
Bit of water on the lens…
I bump into Corinne at half way being a lovely Aunty and dragging her poor niece Maillie in to the water to swim with us!
Back at the Surf Club Greg was brandishing his big one.
(Wendy’s bought him a new camera to take to Everest Base Camp next month!)
I missed the fever of Cow Nose Rays last Wednesday but they still could be around as there was a sighting at the weekend. I took the photos above in January 2018 but they’ve also been seen in the bay in February this year and October and December 2017 so they do visit us often!
A thank you to Jim Burke who delivered an interesting and informative talk at Bluewater last night about shoulder injuries for swimmers. He’s going to give us some exercises which will be put at bottom of the blog soon. In the meantime he stressed the importance of rotation in swimming to help put less stress on the shoulder.

Wet or dry, your blogs always hit the spot. And I love that they always come with a little nugget of news about who’s doing what. Love a bit of backstory!

Thanks Elaine for the blog and photos. It’s great to read about the swim and back stories. I travel from Turramurra to do the swims…that’s nothing compared to Galston.
