Friday 3 May 2019 Collective nouns and superhero

03/05/201911

No collective noun for waves so far as google told me so I have decided that today it was a nightmare of waves. I feel proud of myself for entering through them but even as I took them one at a time and chanted (as the BB elders have taught me), the waves are your friend – because the flat rip water is not – I had decided that half way was the exit for me.

Out at sea

I exited at halfway which was also hard because of the crashing water but I am familiar and confident there – it makes all the difference. If you are not skilled at navigating waves, don’t enter the surf. The lifesavers were on hand at entry and exit and had to save some people. If you need help, ask but better still, swim to your ability.

Like a true gem, John Bond and John Kelly stayed near half way to help people with navigating the exit or just to make sure they were ok.

Also, John Kelly was like Aquaman today – he saw the lone blue bottle, and wrapped himself around it to save everyone else. Welts were increasing around two underarms even as I took the photo. Thanks John.

South Curl Curl Swim to Freshwater last weekend

Lots of BB there – Fiona and Inge winning and the rest not but enjoying all the same

Cook Strait – Hammer (google translate said that is awesome in German)

Andre Wiersig successfully crossed the Cook Strait yesterday and I was in a watching party on fb which I did not know of until I was in it. Swimming is an individual sport but I enjoy seeing people achieve their goals and this was a big one. Well done as he is also an ambassador for a cleaner ocean for us all.

The Monthly Dinner – 14th May 2019 – Guest Speaker Peter Anthony Talks on talking

The Next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 14th May at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. Our guest on the night will be B&B Swimmer, Peter Anthony, who has a Masters in Communication and has written a book on conversations.  The title of his talk is You talkin’ to me?  and is a talk about talking. Great conversations build better relationships, better businesses and stronger families. And can make you better parents, better partners, even better lovers. Own your hook, claim the wall, master the benches. Learn how to tell your story in your own best words, and why your way is the best way.

Please book early for this event as it is sure to be popular. The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential:  To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book at www.boldandbeautifulmanly.com.au/bb-bluewater-monthly-dinner.html .

Shitbox Rally

One of our long time swimmers, Tim Slessor is heading off on Shitbox Rally on Monday. The rally raises funds for the Cancer Council of NSW. During the event 250 cars worth less than $1000 travel from Perth to Uluru and then on to Sydney, mainly off road. There are lots of break downs and retirements and of course lots of fun along the way. Tim is part of the support team working on the cars to get them across the line each night but he and his co driver, Alex, still need to raise funds. If you would like to support Tim and Alex please follow the link below to donate. Thank you all very much.

Notice to Dog Owners

Management were requested to attend a meeting with the local Rangers this week regarding a recent complaint about a dog attack. Apparently, an attack can be called an attack if the attacked person states that they were fearful, even if the dog doesn’t make contact.

In the discussion the Companion Animals Act 1998 No 87 was quoted stating; “A dog that is in a public place must be under the effective control of some competent person by means of an adequate chain, cord or leash that is attached to the dog and that is being held by (or secured to) the person”. There is much more to the act but this is the component that the Rangers talked to Management about. In short, a dog cannot be off lead or left tied up without being accompanied by a competent person.  If it is, I gather that fines and even removal of the animal may take place.

Barking was also mentioned but the Ranger commented, quite correctly I feel, that barking generally only occurs when the dog is unaccompanied by it’s owner and so accompaniment should also remove this as an issue.

An action-packed and exciting blog! Sounded all too alarming. Glad I missed it.
Pray tell and vouchsafe to your readers the magic chant the elders all know, to help navigate the waves.
I’ve just finished The Erratics (on Bill’s persistent recommending, oh and a certain literary prize) and thought it was terrific.
    Thanks Friday Blogmistress

Inge. I did not. Her name was Emma and once she hit the waves she floored it and got going. She was great
