Friday 29 December 2017 Summer Daze

December 29, 201710

Another lovely day for a swim at Manly and lots of people came along for a swim today from near and far. The beach was experiencing some dangerous conditions so it is handy as always to be able to swim from South Steyne or from halfway or from Shelly. Each swimmer assesses own ability and swims accordingly, for most enjoyable swim.

Bill and Renae from California joined today and Bill won my heart by saying that he reads the blog! Welcome and I hope you enjoyed the swim even though the water was perhaps too warm for you both

Anne Edwina (with drink in tow) and Ruth

An announcement by the lifeguards and also by management (Nick in foreground of the crowd listening to the announcement) – lots of current and water movement at the beach. Just saying – I am ahead of my time and had a panic in the water on Wednesday. It must have been because dangerous conditions were coming. Lucky I was able, after some considerable nagging, to get a body surfer to help me (as well as some others).

No triathlons so this lot swam today:

Look at these beautiful Viking plaits (above a Joker swimsuit – cool)

here is Annie from North Carolina who happily brought JD down to the swim to show him how it is done

A small number of early swimmers were captured on the camera as I walked to halfway

Here is spectator watching Andy from Lindfield

Errol showing the way to enter at halfway. There is a sandy channel veering at an angle

And look what fabulous people i found at Shelly beach

This lot are having a short sleep after getting in so quickly and while kindly waiting for the other swimmers

Martin

Fiona and Jenn. Welcome back Jenn and Brian after your 3 month cycling etc European holiday. Lovely to have you back

What a great trio – I could not help another photo

This is Annie showing a special North Carolina trik of swimming well above the water. Wow

here is Beth (left) who cannot see and Clare who guides her swim, tethered together, They swam out in the sea today Respect

What I am reading

See What I have done by Sarah Schmidt based on the real life murders of Lizzie Borders parents. A good effort as it is hard to create something based on true events that is imaginative. Also, Signals by Pippa Malmgren on indicators that people should look at in the world around them to better understand the economy. A pretty interesting read and very readable.

Stats:

550-swimmers

-newbies

After the swim a sea fog moved over the beach just to show how Mother Nature is so marvellous and mysterious

SUMMER SWIMS

The 6km summer swims will continue on most Saturdays thru to Feb.
Proposed 10km swim on a Saturday to be advised.
Note: Swimmers for 10km are required to bring their own food and drink requirements to be left at Manly.
ALL swims are dependent on suitable ocean/weather conditions.

Great blog as always (good thing I checked before posting, predictive text wanted black guy instead of blog 🙀)

Well done on capturing the mystical brume that crept in almost imperceptibly until the beach was quite obscured and then just as everyone was going ‘what the…?’ it swept out again as if it had never been

And Elizabeth, besides all the great blogging how do you find the time to read so much?

Beth said she has unfinished business with the surf, having chosen half way today.

While I am a struggling swimmer ( and do tell me if I start to host barnacles because of my slow pace), I am an excellent reader and often read instead of exercising or doing other things. And I like to read so I do.

I don’t understand the blind swimmer succeeding in the rough surf! Wow! Her companion must be super strong 💪. Love all the pics and that a Garmin got returned 😘
