Friday 10 November 2016 Filled with admiration

11/11/20167

There are some good things happening.

Hot off the press: Howard James has broken a 37 year record for the latest swim in the English Channel starting midnight 3 November with air temp of 4 degrees and 14 in the water, completing it in 11 hours 38 minutes. His nickname is H2oward.

Also look at “our” Chloe  McCardel who equalled Des Renford for Australian record for number of crossings. They have done 19! I don’t know if she has a nickname

Big build up to the third thrilling event: Lesley completed 2,000kms today. her nickname is Lesbubs. Only the highly regarded have nicknames

the sea set itself at warm today for the auspicious event

So there was a bolderdash – clocking 2,000 and keeping on adding more kms

and there was celebration on the horizon from some fans who also are working toward the 2000km badge

Two early swimmers completed their swim so they could toast the 2,000km

and brownies and cake to celebrate

Gayle swam early so that she could mark the event and also get to the dentist.

Angela and Rob – Angela noting swimming is a superior activity over eg running

the early swimmers are already out of the water for my encounters

Wendy has some new fins. I think they are moulded on Ian Thorpe’s feet. I might get me some

Angela and Paul – he has been moved out of retirement to train swim squads – it is hard to just relax when you are so skilled and in demand

My good swim mate Alan.

Early swimmer encounters. So many

checking the Garmin – aren’t we all – I hope it was good

Look at these camo goggles

Let’s go at the point.

Not a great photo but I included it because I left too late to make the let’s go at Shelly beach but some nice swimmers waited but not Paul Knight.

Also note it is Remembrance Day today. It marks the cessation of hostilities in 1918.

What I am reading

The Emperor of all Maladies  by Siddhartha Mukherjee a non fiction book about cancer and the development of medical knowledge about it. Fascinating and reads like a pacey novel

 Staying safe

Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf. To read, or even download, click here.

Thanks Elizabeth, as always it’s great to see so many faces in your blogs, a perennial panoply of perps.

Top tip: do not eat a banana BEFORE the boulderdash! The 2 people who came in last (me n’ Gemma).. turns out we both ate a banana beforehand…. it had nothing to do with us not wearing wetsuits or flippers…
Anyway thanks for the congrats! Yes it’s taken me 5.5 years to get 2000 and worth every stroke!!
not wanting to gripe or nuthin but i had to organise my own 2000 km photos….just sayin’

Stop whining Bubbles. You’re lucky anyone showed up at all. Can’t believe it took you 5.5 years to swim 2000km. That’s an average speed of 0.04 km/h. Pathetic.
    Great blog Elizabeth!
